Wow!

DO IT!

Andrew,
That would be totally cool. Great power, and no carb or CARB issues to deal with.

I would say, if you got paid for SAR, I could go get "lost" for a while to help offset the costs.

If I got paid for SAR I'd just spend the $100K and import a 105 series diesel...

It's tempting...plus I can get it with a power steering pump for another $100....

$2500 for a bolt in conversion is cheap!

I am intrigued by the 3FE swap, are those motors rebuilt or as is? This is going to sound strange considering the motors we are talking about but doesn't the 3FE have a reputation of being kinda underpowered?

In the 80 series (~5000lbs.) it is not enough engine for some people. It was fine in the 62 as it is lighter and would be fantastic in a 4* series.

The trick setup is to build a 2FE by using the 3FE head on the 2F block. Effectively a 3FE stroker.

That being said the 3FE even with a shorter stroke is rated ~155hp/220ft-lb where the 2F is ~135hp/210ft-lb. The 3FE has slightly higher compression too (8.1 to 7.8). I don't know what the guys that have done the 2FE are getting.

I'd suggest you stay with the venerable 2F as it is less to maintain and will run on Mexican petrol. The only real world advantage to the 3FE swap is the fuel efficiency as you won't feel 20 hp or 10 ft-lb in the seat.

Here is a great write up about an Aussie that did a turbocharged 2FE. It's a bit technical, but informative.

I had a 3FE in my 80, and yes, it was underpowered; but for Mexico it never missed a beat, and would run off of just about any fuel available. The Cruiserparts kit is apparently a true bolt in kit....with a new wiring harness that plugs into the original...sounds like a great, and all in all inexpensive way to upgrade the motor, while staying original Toyota and gaining fuel injection...

Another four hours to work....

So, I've gotten tired of not seeing out of the back windows when the roads are wet...so I made some mudflaps, reusing the original flap mounts, and adding some rubber bed mat extensions....they work great! I put some lengths of mat in front as well...

...and then got to locating and mounting the rear seat....I'm trying to figure out just how much leg room, and height, will work for a car seat and maybe an adult passenger or two....

I'm using a Bestop Trailmax fold and tumble rear seat built for CJs and 1987-1995 Wranglers....

I still have 40" of room behind the rear seat. I will raise the seat two inches on custom brackets, and bolt the rear of the seat to the floorboard. My idea at this time is to use the folding backrest feature only, which will allow an extension from the rear cargo box to slide forward and give a large sleeping platform.

The interior mount of the spare tire will go away, and a stock rollbar, with cargo barrier, will sit slightly behind the rear seat. I'm thinking water tank on the left fender, and CO2 tank on the right....hmm....:safari-rig:

And a final note about the seat....Bestop didn't include the side latch which holds the backrest in place; unlatching to fold forward....a call to Bestop was kinda frustrating...they can't just send me the latch...I have to return the seat in it's entirety....

Well....a PM to Wil and a quick call to Wendy at Sierra Expeditions solved any issues....Wendy is having a new seat shipped immediately; not even waiting for me to return the seat to them! All I can say is AWESOME! It's great to have such fantastic vendors here!!!

Thanks Wil & Wendy!!!

...and....started talking about a repaint this spring....factory tan all the way, with the white top.....

Good choice on the color, I think it will look great. I can't wait to see some on the trail action shots of it!

And now I'm being tempted by this.....a 3FE conversion!

Though that convo package looks good, give me a call if you want some real world 3FE convo suggestions.

A few things not mentioned:
  • 2F/3F water pump not centered the same, required customizing the radiator shroud,
  • Alternators on the different side, and 2F one does not swing without arm adjustments, which then requires
  • Air pump pole arm modification to clear 2F alternator.
  • 2F starter struggles with the 3FE,
  • No room for stock air cleaner, must use aftermarket conical one, which causes a complete
  • Rerouting of air lines,
  • 3FE intake needs trimming as to not interfere with brake booster.
I could go on. 3FE's one fantastic machine in any older 40 series, but it ain't as plug and play as I was hoping.
