1983 FJ45 Troop Carrier Buildup

I'm still on the fence....I've seen a couple of 45s with the white top, and the look just doesn't do it for me....

As for recent mods...simple pioneer cd/ipod player, new 4x6" speaker in the stock location (finally, tunes!) and a nice steering wheel cover, so I can grip the wheel without gloves on!

...and...I'm on the list for a Bandi snorkle from Brazil.....I like the look over the all plastic Safari Snorkle offering....due in April or May!

I like that snorkle. Reading this thread makes me want to dive back in to my FJ40 project. What kind of steering wheel cover would you get? Something like a nice leather one?

I just picked up a simple, generic cover....for now...a nice, leather one is in the future plans.

That Bandi snorkle looks really nice.

I did a google search and could not find a website. Do you have a link for Bandi?

Bandi is not a brand it is slang for Bandeirante (Scout in Portugese) It is what Land Cruisers are called in Brazil.

From Wiki:
The Bandeirante (OJ50/55, BJ50/55) was a J40 series built in Brazil by Toyota do Brasil Ltda from 1959-2001. Identical to the BJ40 in almost every respect, it had a few stylistic modifications to the grille and used a Mercedes-Benz diesel engine (later replaced by Toyota 14B inline 4 direct injection Diesel engine) for much of its production life.

Perhaps not white, but a lighter tone of the same color?

I've been thinking on this lately, but I'm starting with a black vehicle. A white roof in my case would be fugly, but a lighter colored roof would be very welcome in the desert. The question for me is what lighter color?

I'll never own a FJ40/45 without a white roof...too darn hot...the white makes a huge difference. I am a fan of tan....doesn't show dirt or dents very well, stays cool, and blends in.

The snorkles, as MoGas said, are from the Brazillian made knock offs....a fellow mudder is importing some:

As for today's mod! I received in the mail a brief that sent my blood boiling...so I decided to leave the office for a couple of hours and do some "cruiser therapy." Having just received in the mail new windshield wiper blades, those were quickly installed in the parking garage of my office, and off I went to a local locksmith with the new Toyota key blank for my rear door lock....

Low and behold, I now can get into the locked back of the Cruiser without walking through the front seats!!!!

Now back to work.....:costumed-smiley-007

What about painting the whole top white, and leaving the rest of the truck as-is. That way you'd cover up the bad, and leave the good, and hopefully not stick out too much. It'd look more like a series or wrangler hardtop. Not to make it look like a rover, cause it's way cooler, just seems like an easy way out.

Kinda like this:

Just an idea.

Imitation is the biggest form of flattery.

Andrew,
She is coming along quite nicely.

I personally vote for the tan. I have always liked that color, and have toyed with the idea of a tan 80.

Also, curious as to why you went with the "light" springs? Are you concerned that once you're loaded up you'll sag too much under the weight?

The OME "light" load are rated with +100 lbs. on the front bumper, and 0 to GVW on the rears. With the high GVW of the Troopy, which I'm not going to be close to with my plans, I opted for a more compliant on road ride....so my family won't boycott the rig....

If I decide to go with the heavy set up, I can just order the additional spring, and add it to the rear packs.

I'm really pleased with the ride as it sits, and can still (with 1/2" to spare) fit into my 7' garage....

I agree with Robb, Tan is my absolute favorite cruiser color.

Robb, I think I saw a picture of a Tan 80 on 'mud once if you want to get an idea of what it might look like.

She's staying tan....cool in the summer, warm in the winter, doesn't show dirt or minor blems, and blends in very well....
