1987 4Runner- Expedition Build Up.

I filled my truck up today... got a whopping 9 miles per gallon. I did get 314 miles to the tank, but I was towed nearly 200 miles... meaning I got nearly 200 miles to a gallon on that first gallon or so!

But, ****** that 200, I want to know why my truck is doing so horribly. Yes, its been city mileage.... but previous City MPG was 15-17...

I've been thinking about that one. When I towed you home you were still idling high... for 4 hours or so... probably used more than a gallon.

Another factor may be the playing in the snow in 4wd, idling in the driveway while you warm up your truck / de-ice your windsheild.

See how far this tank gets you... then start worrying.

....:)

.... maybe we can tell your wife this is another emergency that can only be fixed tomorrow night over a few tasty adult beverages! :chef: :peepwall:

Well, the truck idled normally when being towed.

And, yeah, letting it warm up might have something to do with it, but even before it was alright.... even with the high idle it wasnt getting this bad of mileage....

Drove around the county today and it seems to be doing OK... definitely not a 114 miles to a tank...

Still working out my details for this weekend....

I think you are not taking into account you tire/wheel combo. There is a formula somewhere that would give you a more accurate mpg number. The bigger your wheels/tires, the slower your mph reading, thus lower miles per tank. Divide that by how many gallons of fuel......low mpg.
Your current tire/wheel combo is quite a bit bigger than stock size, so I bet that's it.

Truck is getting normal MPG on this short trip...

Found a nice little wall to play on... POSER SHOTS!

This is a nice 8000sq ft ranch house on 2600 acres. With a man cave.

So. I think. I've found my new love.

Mid 90's Mitsubishi Montero SR. Factory rear locker, seats 7, lots of power, all the luxury items, over 15mpg, reliable. Downside, not much aftermarket here. But, the big stuff such as lockers, ARB bumper, Safari snorkel, roof racks can all be added. AND CHEAP to get into! Thats all I'd need for this sort of rig. Only major issue with the truck is that its an "interference motor" and if the timing belt breaks, it'll ruin the motor. No big deal, just need to stay on top of that maintenance (which is 60k on the timing belt). If I built one of these, it'd look almost identical to the one above!:sombrero:

In which case, the 4runner will take on a more offroad physique.

Was under the truck a minute ago checking leaks........

Found that the rubber mount on my transfer case cross member has broken. The rubber itself.

How big of a problem is the above? I've got a decent amount of vibration at 50+mph. Not to mention, the pinion seal on the rear axle has developed a leak, but the seals out of the T-case have also leaked a bit.

They are probably leaking due to the T-case movement. Movement causes misalignment and will damage your seals. I would go ahead and replace them before any more damage is done.

I'm also getting a bit of a squeaking noise when moving slowly forward or back.... coming from one end of the rear drive shaft or the other (pinion seal or T-case seal) I really couldn't tell from the side of the truck.... and wasn't about to get under it with my wife at the wheel! At least she can drive a 5speed.

You may want to see if these will work for you. I have no experience with the vendor. . .

Similar part ( I would bet $1 the exact same part) is available through Marlin and Trailgear. Look under their t case headings. I have the TG version and it is fine. TG mentions that you may feel a bit more vibration over stock. I'm not really sure. It's still better than broken. The OEM V6 version is supposed to be beefier than the 4 cyl but they are $$$ at $110. Good luck.

If you had a nice quiet interior like newer trucks, you may notice. Having owned a 1st gen, I say you probably won't notice it at all.

The truck made the 6 hr drive back to Louisiana today. No problems. And I even got about 21mpg doing 70-75 on the interstate!
Going to order the T-case mount this week if I cant find a junker one.

I also wanted to add... I've been thinking about getting a 2nd truck and have been looking at my options. Well, today on the said 6 hr drive I took mental not of the # of times I spotted the models I am considering.

In order of preference:
Montero (2nd Gen)- 1
Izuzu Trooper (2nd Gen)- 6
Land Rover Discovery- 5
Land Cruiser FJ80- 2
Toyota 4Runner (2nd/3rd Gens) +40

I was glad to see the Montero, was really keeping my eyes peeled.

I also went exploring on the drive back. A road that I have traveled previously (old stomping grounds) I have had to turn around because of road flooding. Well Louisiana has been receiving lots of rain so I thought I'd test this road to see if it were flooded... Unfortunately it wasnt.
