just my opinion, but i like russel's idea of going to the frame better. i kinda thought of building the back half of an exo cage and bolting a rack to it. it just seems to me that you would end up with problems over time by bolting to the body. my 2 cents

Sorry...I'm not good at doing these "Paint" drawings.
I have always wondered if you could put a Flat Bar Support just under the topper, at the seam. And then put a riser support above for a roof rack. You could still take off your topper if you wish, and your rack could still be there. You could even use the rack for shade, while your top is off, by putting a thin sheet of plywood or/other on it's base.
If this could work. You would really have No Visible damage to your 4Runner!
Try to zoom in and see what I mean. My red lines looked huge when I did it....but now they are small.
I tried my best...
I am so computer challenged! It took me 20 min. just to get this red line pic drawing to show up! UG! I even had to email it to myself, to get it here!

Great build thread. I love to see the "real" Toyota trucks/4Runners get taken care of and transformed.

the idea of putting flat steel under the top would work. i did just that with angle iron that ran full length of the bed of my tacoma and welded pads that stuck out past the edge of the bed, and build two hoops over the canopy that the roofrack mounts to. i made pads on the rack and drilled holes through them and the pads on the angle so the hoops can be removed also.

Add a third riser for heavier loads in the Middle, if needed!
I only had the patients to draw two!

i thought my canopy would leak from it smashing the rubber seal on the canopy, but it didnt and ive been in some nasty *** downpours. i only needed to hoops over the canopy, but u could use more if needed its just my rack is heavy duty enough to not need more than the two. i used 2X1 rectangular tube and sucked it close to the canopy and works great.

We are in the middle of _____________ (Podunk), Oklahoma with some mechanical issues........
We wheeled the trucks pretty hard today, but it wasnt until after getting on the hwy that I notice the truck has apparently lost power. 4th gear I'm barely able to get 50mph. Its also chugging (surging) a bit when left at a constant RPM usually around 3000.
Any ideas? We figure the truck went into safe mode and so we disconnected the battery.
Any thoughts? Power was fine all day before this.

Guess:
Improper amount of air, be it a disconnected vacuum or rock thrown up and keeping linkage for opening all the way. Eyeball every inch of the motor.

What size flatbar did you use?
Idle is smooth except its gone back to revving up to 2000.
I'd be inclined to back away from the vacuum leak then and concentrate on air intake. Not being familiar with this motor it seems to me you are getting roughly the same amount of air intake regardless of the amount of fuel being dumped in by you stepping on the accelerator. I'd buy a suitable spray cleaner and start going through your air intake avoiding the MAF, there is specific cleaner for it.
