1990 K5 Blazer Build

I love these old k5's especially the rust free ones. I actually almost bought a rust free cucv blazer out of wyoming. was in amazing shape, 98k and still had factory paint, manuals tool kit etc. They only wanted 4200 but couldnt meet on my trailblazer for a trade. This is an extreme budget build as im trying to spend under 1500 to get it rolling down the road including the tires.

Ok, its been a while since an update and i figured its about time i give one.

I will be getting the cab on the 14th of december hopefully, possibly a bit later. I have begun disassembly of the current body but im not going to pull the rear cap off until i get all the **** out of it and have the new cab ready to go on. Im also about to sell my 91 tempo to buy the tires for this rig as it will be my new dd. I am set on doing 2 inch front lift shackles with 1 inch zero rates from ord, along with a 2-3 inch rear shackle flip/lift from odd with a zero rate as well. I want a 1 inch rake from the rear to the front, this way it'll sit level when loaded up. As i already have 33's on 16 inch procomp wheels with no lift i have no doubt that the 35's i want to run will fit with the 3 inch lift i am planning to run.
The next decision i have to make is whether i want to go with all terrains or mud terrains. I plan on running tire size 35/12.50/R15 as it is cheaper than going with the 16's and i still have the stock 15 inch wheels. I am selling the current 16's with worn bfgs that are on the truck. asking 400 obo for those. I can get 35/12.5/15 Bfg all terrain KO's for 196 per tire shipped which i think is a good deal. i can also get the same size general grabber at2, which also seems to be a good tire, but bfg seems to be one of the best brands. The same size bfg mud terrain is 236/tire shipped but since this is a budget build id rather put the extra $160 towards lifting the truck/ misc maintenance parts i'll need. My real question here is whether or not it is worth the extra $160 for the mud terrains. I plan to use it offroad up in northern mi which is very sandy soil, almost beach like. Much of the driving will be on the street with snowy winters as well as a decent amount of rain. in about a year i will be moving to the upper peninsula of Michigan and the truck will be seeing offroad use daily. I would appreciate any thoughts on tires. (link to tires below)

the other plan for this truck is to swap in an sm465 which will be much easier with the body off. i found a sm465 which was mated to a 205 locally for $150, im trying to get him to sell it with the 205 as it would make life a bit easier. I still need to gather parts for the swap and if i get the trans i will sell the 700r4, which shifts very well and np241 t case to buy the clutch parts and pedal assay.

Planning to have all this work completed no later than january 20th 2013

Also i am looking for the following components and wondering if anyone here has anything lying around:
tire carrier/rear bumper for gm c/k trucks
4wd steering box for 73-87 trucks i good shape (not worn out)
sm465/205 combo
sm465 swap parts such as clutch pedal assay/hydraulic clutch assay
good seats for interior.

And here is a link to performance plus tires with the search for my tires. If anyone knows of a cheaper place to get tires please let me know

Well got the blazer painted yesterday. Did two coats of rolled on Rustoleum truck bed coating and used Krylon Ultra flat camouflage paint for it. Turned out very good, will get some pics in the sun once i get my new throttle body.

How did you like using the Rustoleum truck bed coating ? Is it as good as the other bed liners available?

It's pretty good. it coated the truck well, i got 2 coats on the entire exterior, the plow and the tailgate with one gallon with some leftover. It covered well, but i probably should have gone with a 3rd coat. I would also have liked it to be a bit more substantive, but i did roll it on.

For this rebuild i think i will be going with raptor liner and tinting it od green then spraying it on, or just go with the herculiner and spray od green over that.

Got the cab! time to start cutting

So got the cab for the truck today and tomorow i am cutting the body in half as long as i can fix my grinder. got the cab off the frame and loaded up and everything came back in one piece which is always a plus. this week i should hopefully hhave the entire old body stripped out and by the weekend i hope to be able to have a rolling chassis that i can paint and begin making the cab mounts for. i still need to strip the donor cab down, i have decided on raptor liner tinted 383 card green as the paint i will be using.
getting really excited and hope i can finish it before jan 20th, will be lots of work and a decent bit of money so wish me luck. the best part of all this is i work at an auto shop and have access to the forklift making the body swap easier and since we have commercial parts account i get the wholesale prices which will save me about 4-500 bucks i parts such as brakes, tie rods, ball joints, u joints etc.

So today i pretty much completely stripped the dash of the cab. I will most likely take the heater controls out as well to paint it and finish pulling the rest of the unecessary wiring. the only wiring i am keeping from the cab is the heater wiring as i am resuing the non-a/c cab's heater and completely eliminating the a/c system. although i would like a/c i am keeping this vehicle less complex and dont want to modify the firewall/dashboard. tomorrow i hope to get the sawzall out and cut the blazer body in half and remove the rear section to begin the frame work and painting.

So a little update. I've got the body completely cut in half and ready to come off. I have the original cab almost stripped and have also sold the plow off of my blazer as well as the wheels/tires.
I wasnt able to get much further as i began my second semester of school in peoria on jan 23rd and didnt want to pull all the wiring and a/c if i wasnt going to be able to mount the cab and put it all back in before i left. I figured when i get back to chicago in may i will get a fresh start and have everything fresh in my mind. SO the projct ison hold until i finish this semester and move back to chicago. this will be good though as i will have much more time to pay atention to the details and will be working full time again so i'll have better project funds. gotta say a forklift makes life so much easier.

here are some pics with the plow off, the cut on the body, and how shes sittin for the next few months

I'll be done may 14th. I'm really excited to get this done, however i found a nearly rust free 89 k-10 with brand new 35" muds and a plow on it for 900 bucks, but it needs a trans. since i already sold my plow for 400, i am thinking that i may pickup that truck as a long bed would be better for me, and drop my motor/trans in it. then i would sell the cab and scrap the rest of it. Really not sure yet. but because it has a plow and new 35's it is worth the 900 bucks as that is close to what i would be spending for the tires alone. This would also save me a lot of work.

If i do keep this truck i will be lifitng it 1-2 inches and putting 35" all terrains on it. The only part of this build i am really worried abut is building the corssmember. My welder is not big enough for frame welding (miller 120 if i remember correctly) and the shop i work for has a 220v mig but it is set up for aluminum so i cant use that.

I will give an update the week of the 13th.

Sold the K5 because i needed cash and a driver

Replaced it with this (1984 Chevy K20):

Which has since been replaced by a 97 F250 PSD:

Just turned 323,500 miles.
Swapped in a D60 on july 12th of this year and about to hit the Upper Peninsula for a week of backwoods camping and trail riding this coming Saturday. Although I miss the Chevy I could not be happier with this truck and getting 19.5 mpg on the highway with 2 bikes in the bed is pretty nice.
