300 mile update:
Well I have 300+ miles on the new engine so far. Almost all the driving has been around town and few trips on the freeway to downtown San Diego for Leg appointments.

Starting the engine the first time:
Starting the engine the first time was easier than I thought it would be (This was my first fuel injected engine install) my friend Jon came over on a Saturday morning to help me get the engine started and to break in the new camshaft. Jon was Mr. Outside, adjusting the timing and watching the radiator water while I was in the cab starting the engine, holding the RPM at 2000+ and watching the gauges. The engine fired right up and struggled to get to 2000 at first. It ran for about 5 minutes then just quit. So we advanced the timing a little and restarted the engine. This time it started and went straight to 2000 and was sounding really good (except for the blown out muffler). This time the engine ran for about 10 minutes before it quit running. Every once in a while I would get a “check engine” light but it would not stay on it would just blink and the engine would cut out for a second. Again we advanced the timing a little and it fired right up and ran for a full 20 minutes at 2000+ before letting it idle. No overheating and great oil pressure so I decided to pester my neighborhood by taking it out for spin around the block. She ran great but was still cutting out with the check engine light. At this point I was thinking the blown out muffler was causing the check engine light but later I found that I had not tightened the nut to the alternator wires (problem fixed).

New Muffler:
The Next Monday I took off early from work to get the new muffler installed and I have been driving it every day sense. The new muffler is a Flow Master 50 series that is designed to be installed on big Block cars and trucks; it has a 3inch inlet and outlet. The muffler is louder then I wanted, but I still need to install a Catalytic converter. My hope is that a new Cat will quiet it down a little.

Horse Power:
Since the engine is new I been have taken it a little easy so far. So far this engine is making more power than the old one, but it is not a power house (didn't really expect it to be one). This new engine pulls hard to 4000RPM were before with the old engine would start falling off around 3500RPM. I have not gone over 4000RPM, but it feels like it will keep pulling when I do. This tells me that the performance valve springs and Cam were well worth it. I was really concerned about towing up hills now that this make good power over 4000RPM I know it will do fine as a tow rig.

Next on the project list:
Other than driving it and getting it dirty a lot I will be searching for a good 700R4 transmission and transfer case to rebuild. This new motor will love an overdrive transmission. I plan to do the rebuild myself so I will know how to repair it in the future. I will also install a new Meziere water pump and aluminum radiator with twin electric fans to prevent any cooling problem I might have in the future.
I will also start on the sleeping and storage platform for the rear cargo area. I plan to move the spare into the middle of the floor and build the platform over it. I will build a water tank for the old spare tire space. This should help to spread the weight out and keep it low.

Nice work 1LEG. Glad to hear you got her running well. When she's broken in enough to go for a full throttle run I would like to know what your final thought is on weather or not the extra power add ons were worth it. Since i'm planning the same build.

Nice build!

It's always cool to do your own engine installation. The excitement on the first start up is like no other!

It's probably hard to compare (when you have a whole new engine), but how do you like the Edelbrock intake? I would imagine the design helps torque & mileage compared to the stock one. Do you have any mileage numbers yet on the new engine, or still breaking it in?

I dig the white!

Almost 500miles still running good.
No MPG # yet, it seems about the same as before.

Today I trimmed the air cleaner base to match the procharger. Installed the MSD coil, wires and cap.

1 issue I have, I'm getting a fuel smell when I'm idling at a light. No fuel leaks that I can find, I'm thinking it could be a bad fuel injector or maybe the computer needs fine tuning. Need to get a cable to hook up my laptop and do some datalogging.

Sorry I haven’t given any updates lately; July was a little crazy at work. So the new motor has over 1000 miles now. I have made a few upgrades. I finally installed the MSD coil, Cap and new MSD plug wires, I cut out the center of the air cleaner base to match the power charger, Blacked out the grill and some chrome molding, removed the side steps.
A few people have been asking about the power of this motor. At around 600 miles you could feel the motor finally starting to free up some power and at 1000 miles she is really making some power. Funny thing is the motor is actually starting to get quieter too; I was thinking the flow master muffler was a big mistake (too loud) but it’s now tolerable. The MSD coil and wires seemed to smooth the idle out. Now she isn’t going to win too many drag races but I would suggest this combo to any buddy that wants a mild TBI 350 built that should pass CA smog (not confirmed yet). However I think I left about 20-30 Horsepower in my wallet by not getting a better set of heads. I think a set of world products SRs(?) or doing the vortec swap would be best for this combo. I would also recommend bumping the compression to around 9 to 1. I really wish I had done something about the low stock compression (8.5 to1).
Currently working on some issues;
When I pull off the freeway after a long drive I have no power steering until I turn the wheel a few times. This isn’t a problem driving back and forth to work (10miles) until this morning. I replaced the power steering pump last night and that seems to have made the problem worse. I’m thinking now it’s the steering box itself. I really don’t know anything about these systems other than to replace them. The hoses look almost new but I will replace them for GP. I plan to leave for Nevada Friday on a 1200+ mile trip so I need this to get this done quick.
The other issue I have is at idle. She idles a little rough in drive (not horrible). I haven’t really done anything on this yet other then add the MSD parts that seemed to help some. I think I need to rebuild the TBI unit make sure the TPS is set correctly and maybe some new matched injectors. I also plan to install a 3 wire O2 sensor. After all this I will begin doing some Data logging and fine tuning the chip.
Need to install all new U-joints, I have no idea how many miles these unit have.
Need to service the transmission.
Add roller tip rockers.
Find, Rebuild and install a 700r4 overdrive transmission. I need one from a 88-91 blazer/suburban in case someone has one laying around.

Re: 700R4: Having gone down the path of rebuilding I now wish that I had just bought it outright.

Understood, It's not a $$ issue now but in the future. I want to gain the knowledge, experience and tools to do the rebuild myself. This will keep the price lower in the future when it will need to be rebuilt again. Plus it would be nice to help friends out when they need there transmission rebuilt.

The org, plan was to use a gear vender and keep the th400, but this seems to add complexity and length to the driveline.

There was a time when I'd have been interested in doing the same thing. Time has become too valuable to me these days.

Years ago at the SEMA show I asked GV to please put their OD between the trans & t/c. They wanted no part of that. I guess they'd rather have that mass cantilevered off the back of a cantilevered t/c? Makes no sense to me at all.

You'll need a new input for the 241. I got mine direct from JB Conversions.

Hey 1leg,

That's interesting about the grille, and I only say that because I picked one up a couple of weeks ago that was totally blacked out as well! Although it looked pretty good, I prefer the chrome trim, and gingerly removed the black from the chrome & bow-tie emblem... I don't have any photos of what it looked like before or after yet.

Good to hear that your engine is running better too; I know it takes a while to break in nicely. I wonder if the computer is just not liking the new cam & intake combo? I'm not quite a TBI master yet LOL but I suppose I will be learining more & more about it myself.

Any updated pics of your rig?

Well I took the burban on it's first road trip, 1200 miles to Ely, Nv and back all highway or 2 lane black top. Spent a week with my dad at the ranch. She only broke down once the whole trip. about 100 yards away from the ranch drive way she throw the fan belt. ended up be a bad idler pulley. While i was there i installed all new front spring bushing. when i got home i had the frontend aligned. she was over 2 degrees toed out. She handles good now but still needs some good shocks.

It's lifted!!!

After some research I decided to try a re-arch on the stock springs. I really don't like any of the aftermarket springs and my only option was custom made spring that are way out of my price range. So this will be a long term real life test. I will post up a picture every few months to show how well they will hold up. I have only drove it a few miles, and it road a lot better. I will be heading out to do some wheeling this weekend.

Next week I will be getting a custom exhaust system installed. New shorty headers should be back from the coating shop tomorrow. BTW the lift was needed so i could have the exhaust run the way i want. Pics next week.

Spec: Stock springs rebuilt and re-arched to gain 3 inchs of lift. 1 new leaf added to each of the front springs. New longer Gas Monroes all around with new bushings and u-bolts.

That is a real nice low budget lift solution 1leg. What axels are you running in that Burb? The truck is looking good. Keep those pics coming....:wings:
