Just re-read the first 15 pages or so and every time I see your work I'm amazed!!

For the 3-link, would it really be that much stronger to run the shocks behind?

Stronger? No, I run them behind the axle so I can run a longer shock. Most people mount them to the top of the axle but you can gain roughly 3-4" of shock length by mounting them on centerline behind the axle.

No, I use wire to hold the shocks at the mock-up length so they're not pushing on the brackets.

Oh I see good point! Well you could always add an extension to the shock tower but that's not as clean...haha

my front coil lower mounts. but my axle is 8" over.

Man those coils are going to be tight against the control arm bracket. Have you driven it yet?

Wider axles are not just for width. Packaging is so much easier on a wide axle.

tight, yes. all clears though. Been on the trails since i finished the front, now its in the garage getting a motor swap (5vz :wings: )
as they say- measure many times, burn it in once.

I have tons of faith in you, based on the work you've posted up on the forums. but a wider axle is going to make your life much easier. Maybe a fj80 front fits the bill?

That's a nice looking 4Runner. Are you going to start a thread for the motor swap? I hope so.

The axle issue is not a cost concern, I just kind of like the skinny look of the stock axle right now. I figure I can build a Diamond axle for about $2500 including the ARB and gears for the HP FJ80 diff.

Housing $1000 +/-
Inner shafts $500
RCV joints $600
ARB $750
5.29's and bearings $300

Then for the suspension:
Coilovers $700
Springs $250
Joints $250
Tubing $200
Steering 1 ton upgrade $100

Progress Update

I had a couple days to kill so I decided it was time to use up the exhaust parts sitting on the shelf. The front half of the exhaust was built when I did the motor swap, but the tailpipe/muffler had to be fabbed.

It's pretty self explanatory.

I used a flat oval bend for the tailpipe to give that Trans Am racer look.

Since it's a side exit, I bought a muffler with the inlet and outlet on the same side. It's actually pretty quiet this way.



I like to use OEM style mountings so the hangers were bent from 3/8 stainless rod to use the factory rubber hangers.







To keep the tip from wobbling around and banging against the body I put one more mount right behind the exit.
