2001 bad tranny question

I have 2001 automatic fg with a bad tranny...I have gotten a price from the dealer for 4k or a local shop for 3k....or I can buy a rebuilt one on ebay for 2 k...My question is what do you think is the best route to go. I have heard the autmatic go throw trannys like crazy....or maybe there is a swap that can be done? Thanks guys

Standard transmission are not much better--syncros don't hold up that well. I just got my 5 spd manual 99 rebuilt at Mountain Truck and Equipment in Longmont, CO for about $2900 including new clutch, resurfaced flywheel and new rear main seal. I looked for a rebuilt but finding one for an FG seemed very difficult. I was very happy with the work they did.
