Okay Patriots, why should I buy a Patriot with offroad package over a Renegade Trailhawk? On the configurator, the cost for a Latitude is only a few bucks shy of the basic TH. 16 to 16.

And if I gotta pay $15k, why a Patriot over a similarly priced Subaru?

I'm just having to make some convincing arguments to justify a purchase. BTW, already have links to Christophe's review but there's little for me to push away from another vehicle.

Thx.

The difference between the gade and the pat is size. There is more space for people and gear in the pat. After owning a Subaru, I would never own another. The jeep is a much better package for less money. Apples to apples comparison in features. The pat is the sweet spot for off road capability to dollars spent.

Both are great little rigs and like Kojack said it comes down to size. In my opinion and just between the 2 vehicles I would go for a trailhawk renegade, they are pretty sweet! Your gonna loose a little bit of space but where the renegade is new and the patriot is on its way out, jeep is probably gonna pay more attention to detail towards the renegade. I've seen where people have bought a brand new patriot and it has serious interior squeaks and the dealer wouldn't do anything about it. My 2010 squeaks like crazy...it drives me nuts...mainly because my last couple rigs have had a squeak and this one didn't until I brought it Home lol. On a side note, Both have little aftermarket support but between the 2 there is more support for the patriot...at this moment in time.

Don't get me wrong I love my little patriot, and its a make the best of what you got situation, but if I was walking into a new purchase of any vehicle of my choice for a shade under $30k I wouldn't choose either of them...I wouldn't choose a subi either...even though I loved the outback wagon I camped out of and beat the hell out of up and down the East cost for 5 years.

I would but a gently used 2014/2015 Nissan Xterra pro-4x. With that you get a traditional 4h/4l system with traction control and a rear diff lock. Not to mention a 4.0 v6, with tons of aftermarket support.

Or I would buy an gently used JKU and we all know there is a ton of options there.
I would even look into a used 4 runner.

However if your going for a daily driver plus a weekend adventure rig you get a lot of bang for your buck with either the one of the patriot or renegade.

Thanks for indulging me and my questions guys. All valuable considerations. I have no off-road experience and it will be my DD, so my wife has stipulated that the future overland vehicle has to be 25 mpg (EPA combined), or close (my stipulation). It's a compromise in case she hates overlanding that I'm willing to make right now. That really limits the options, although not beyond possibility. If things go well for a couples of years, I'll be able to get a mall-crawled PRO-4X.

- Rattling is something I hate, but I'm experienced at tracking down and fixing (years of high-end car audio systems).
- Size would be a factor, but my desire is to have a small trailer eventually. The Renegade would require making the step sooner.
- If I were to get something off-the-lot, the "up-and-coming" 'gade would be more attractive, and support will only grow.
- People seem to either love, hate, or don't have any experience with Subarus. I hated them, but that was 15 years ago.

Thanks again. I'll move it from the list of possibilities to the list of test drivers.

The Renegade for me was just to cramped on the inside. Plus I've always liked the XJ Cherokee platform and this kinda-sorta shares the same lines. The Subaru is a very very good platform, but personally ocne again was wanting to stay in the Jeep family

The interior size of the patriot compared to the renegade is quite a difference. Our suitcases cant fit in the rear of the gade, but no issues in the patriot. The Subaru, mine was in the garage constantly with computer issues, leaks, wind noise from the frameless doors, misfires constantly, and overall poor build quality. The back break was the 7000 dollars out of my pocket in ten months for so called warranty repairs.

Ouch! My subi had many issues as well. Flashing cell= hard miss fire. There were many times when we were ready to go and the subi was like...well guys I don't know about this...lol. However, there were more times that we camped out of the back of it with my shoes off staring at a camp fire and a clear nights sky. When I traded it in on a land rover d2 it was on its last leg lol. I remember driving it in and praying...please take it as a trade lol.

I'm liking your style there JHill. It bothers me that the headlights don't look round but the accents you've added draw my attention away from them. Nice work.

Thank you! That bothers me too. I want them to be round so I can add some jk speaker leds, but there's no chance in that ever happening. I could retro fit some halos or hids and paint the inside of the housing black but that's a lot of work.

I just checked the EPA MPG for the off road package Patriot and I'm a bit shocked; 20/23. That's horrible compared to the CVT1 and manual transmissions, and doesn't come close to what I need to keep the wife happy. Please tell me your experience is better than that!

NOPE. I had the off road package in my 2010 and it was almost as bad as my 2011 JK unlimited on gas, the new one with the 6sp is FAR better, in every way. It drives better, better milage, less annoying as its not always buzzing the crap out of the motor...I could go on and on. Really, the new 6sp almost has the same low ratio as the FDII pat, and the rest of the package can be added easily.

I just towed about 1200 pounds for about 2 hours up and down mountain...the cvt is the worst thing I've ever towed with!

Please put this exact statement and photo over on the "other" site. I have to tow with mine to see the difference.
