2011 Wrangler rollout this summer

The rumor mill says the 2011 Wrangler will be introduced this Summer. The expected change is under the hood: a new 3.6L V6 with 280 hp and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. That's 38% more hp and 10% more torque than the current Wrangler V6.

Lots of small changes are coming, too, in response to owner feedback. No diesel engine for USA, though.

The new V6 will also be used in the all-new Grand Cherokee. Eventually, the 3.6L V6 will sprout all sorts of variations, including turbo versions.

That's cool!

That SUCKS, but was expected

I'll take a turbo gas engine as a close 2nd for a turbo diesel... Maybe we can get an SRT Rubicon?

Yep, and some nice "interior" changes too. This is going to make a nearly perfect overlander - perfect. (well, except for the absence of a RTW diesel)

Yes, the new motor is much more modern. I have done some work on it and it should be a big improvement over the current engine. Not sure about a turbo in a jeep however - I would pass on one due to durability and complexity concerns. Also, not much benefit to my type of driving and not great towing as well. Much rather have a supercharger for that. I do work for Eaton and they have some impressive stuff coming out that would be really interesting in a Wrangler type vehicle.

Nice to hear that seem to finally be getting serious about better, more powerful engines.

I would think that the new V6 should handily address any power concerns. I can't see why you would need more than that. It is great that Jeep seems to be the only manufacturer that produces vehicles in this segment that really listens to it's fanbase. Now, if they'd just listen to the throngs of people that would love a diesel option in the states. If I was in the market for a new vehicle in the US for the stuff I like to do, a JK unlimited would be my hands down pick, well, outside of the J8 of course.:sombrero: Just gotta wait for the prices to come down on the used market a bit.

The new V6 will be a big improvement over the current engine, but it is unfortunate that the AEV snorkel and Kilby air compressor system will not fit this new power plant. There will not be any dual battery trays either. I suspect Kilby will produce the necessary brackets in time and that someone will eventual make a dual battery tray, but the AEV snorkel may never have a fitment for the new engine given that the snorkel is also designed to work with the AEV hood and a very specific placement of the air intake.

This is great news, a JK could be the next addition to the family this fall.....

I wonder if the owner feedback included bent/broken Axle housings, maybee with the new power the axles will get and upgrade.:luxhello:

I'm thinking with the ongoing death-wobble issues I'm having, it would be nice if they'd beef up the steering components while they're at it. Perhaps Fiat will? At a little over 24k miles on my '09 JKU, my ball joints are shot...

Do you know...

If the body panels will be the same? Was wondering if the 2011 JK will fit with the AT flippac top they're producing? I've got one on order!:victory:

Awesome news.

I have been looking at used JK's but was leary on the power plant end of it.

20k is a lot of money to throw at the 8 cylinder conversion.

I guess we will see in the summer what the '11 is going to be like.

The problem I see isn't even the actual figures them selves... it's where in the Rev-range they occur. The 3.8 makes plenty of power adn in fact makes far more HP then the old 4.0L but the lack of displacement and the engine's configuration both in layout and intended purpose means that it's ill-suited for hauling a heavy, brick like truck around. Sadly, I see the 3.6 being more of the same. Sure it sounds like it makes more power, but I'd imagine that once again, the torque peak will be at an even higher RPM then the current motor.

Only time will tell, but all of tis wasted time and effort could be used to get us a diesel... stop trying to re-invent the wheel, a diesel engine is EXACTLY what a truck needs. HP is for sports cars and motorcycles... bring back the 4.0L's torque curve and I bet there'd be less complaints about the engine ;)

Cheers

"The [Pentastar V6]'s torque exceeds 90 percent of its peak value from 1,600 to 6,400 rpm"
http://www.allpar.com/mopar/phoenix-engines.html

that would make torque at 1600 rpm at least 234 ft-lb.

Also in the article quoted is news that Chrysler has a direct injection
version of the V6. That means better fuel economy and maybe better
power, at the expense of extra noise. The article says the direct
injection motor will be used in trucks and the Wrangler because their
owners won't care about the noise!

I'd second the diesel option. When you wind the current JKs out to about 3K or so, they move just fine. It's below that where they need help, right where off-road use needs the power to be.

However the current engine doesn't make "far more HP" at all. It's rated at 202HP, where the last of the 4.0 I-6 were 190HP. I think you were confusing that with the I-4 option they offered back then (147HP.)
