2012 Tacoma?

We'll have to agree to disagree. I would be willing to pay $5k for a diesel that got me 25mpg. I'm not willing to pay anything for a simple face lift.

The Ranger must have had some success as the only compact available, seems they were alone in their niche market for some time.
I'm driving one now while my Tacoma with the failed head gaskets that Toyota has yet to stand behind (and probably won't until at least half the affected truck are already paid for out of pocket) get replaced. Where was I? Oh yeah.
It's a great little truck. Hate to see it go.

x2 - It would pay for itself in about 2 years...

For comparison sakes...the Ford Eco-Boost is $4500 up charge from the non-turbo V6.

So about the same...

If a diesel came in the Tacoma, I would run out buy a brand new one...and I never buy new.

The new Tacoma is ugly but then that is no surprise is it? Every new reface or redo the Tacoma has gone through has been ugly the first year or so when they come out. I hated the 05's but now they have grown on me. When the 01-04's came out all the 97 guys bagged on the grill and the headlights. Nothing new under the sun, it just looks different.

I am disappointed in the facelift. And I do like the looks of the 4Runner.

Not that I was going to trade in my 07 or anything. Hope to drive it well into the 2020s.

I don't care for the second gen Taco so much, mostly the interior. I have been driving my first gen so long that I plan to skip the whole second gen and wish for a all new better rig in 2014. A diesel would be great but dont think it will happen. If it does I will be of the few that get the real value out of it (currently @ 271,000 miles on my first gen). A few things I would like to see is make all the safety equipment optional ie: ABS, air bags, ATRAC, down hill assist, etc. This stuff is unnecesary if you pay attention to the task at hand.. DRIVING. It should not be a far reach for Toyota to engineer a Tacoma that is capable of 25 MPG that is gas fueled, the current D4D gets 28. This future Tacoma should have a payload of 1500 lbs as well. The rear axle should be full floater with disk brakes. When going to school I worked at a machine shop that built professional racecar parts and the low end 9" Fords could handle 800 HP, so this is not a reach at all for a massive car manufacture. Cost will be high for this rig, maybe 32,000 but in return a high milage durable rig will be a good trade off. Most will not be willing to pay a high price for a mid size rig because they trade them off every 4 years or less. Sad because a vehicle is the second biggest purchase most people will make in their life, of course look at the current state of the largest purchase of their life (a home).

All this talk about willing to pay a $5K premium for a "high" mileage diesel tacoma is a little unrealistic IMO...maybe from a supercharged four banger that can squeeze out 25 mpg but a diesel engine premium (D4D) would be higher in my mind...IIRC the price of a Diesel Hilux with all the amenities isn't the same as a US tacoma + 5K...(toyota.com.au quotes about 60K AUD)...I think 45,000-50,000 USD is what you might be looking at????...the cheapest US made big three diesel 2500/3500/250/350 is about 45,000 in a fairly stripped down package...not what most people want to buy
I think a diesel tacoma here just would be too expensive...I wish it would be an option but I don't see it being practical...I hope I'm wrong...I would buy one...
On another note,... from what I have been reading on some ford forums the eco boost isn't getting much better than 20 mpg in real world driving...you can hyper mile anything but not everyone is willing to drive like that...

It is getting the same mileage as the 5.0 V8 which is $750 less, just more power.

Gonna be spendy when the turbos go....owners better trade it in before warranty expires.:ylsmoke:

I dunno, VW, BMW, Audi...all have diesels here...I don't see it being that expensive of an option...heck the price difference between the VW Jetta gasser and diesel really isn't that much different.

EXACTLY!!!!...I would choose a V8 without hesitation if I was going the ford direction...

I think a better option for toyota might be to offer the 4.6l "small" V8 in the Tacoma...
That combo would rip and compared with the rev happy 4.0l V6 could get better mileage

I agree those makers have kept the difference reasonable...
There is a 10K AUD difference between petrol and diesel hiluxes...
Not sure how it would translate in the US market... but a similar difference would still but the D4D tacoma closer to 45K

Yeah I dunno either....with the BMW 335 there is only a $2000 difference between the two engine styles. Of course you loose roughly 35 HP and gain about 8 mpg with the diesel option, which cost more...hmmm.

There is always a trade off...

Back on the topic of the OP regarding the facelift...I think I will stick it out to 2014:ylsmoke:

I think I am going to go backwards and try to find a nice FJ45. The best looking Toyota truck ever.

C'mon Mike, you know it has nothing to do with the interior.

You're just mad that Toyota didn't bring back your favorite color, Periwinkle, in the second gen and are hoping they bring it back with the third gen.
