So do lower trims without "auto" still lock up in 4hi and 4lo????? Because if not, I guess I'm back to reading up on other manufacturers.

Edit*
What is even the purpose of an off-road package with a center dif that doesn't even mechanically lock up??????

Just checked all dealers within 100kms of my place and there are 5 Supercab 2.7s, none of which have the features I want, and all have the XTR package (302a essentially) I don't want.
Good luck getting a Tremor or anything if you live in Nowhere Canada.

Why not wait until supply outpaces demand and then order what you want?

If you're asking about the Tremor, then it appears that all all trim levels have 4A. The transfer case in the 400a & 401a package rely on clutches to fully lock in 4H & 4L. I expect this works very well when the truck is new and begins to degrade as the miles pile up, especially if 4A is used a lot. Regular (non-Tremor) XL & XLT trucks without 4A have a normal 2-speed transfer case without clutch packs.

Its not a diff, its clutches. And yes, they can “lock” but its the clutch plates that are locking together and so they could, in theory, slip if there is enough torque differential between the front and rear axle.

In 2Hi the clutches are fully released.

In 4Auto, the clutches are varied on the fly to apply a certain amount of torque to the front axle depending on what you doing. It is not Automatic 4Hi, it is an AWD mode that can be used on dry pavement.

4Hi the clutches are fully engaged and “lock” the front and rear axle together.

4Lo is the same as 4Hi but with gear reduction.

Any of the 4Auto tcases from GM or Ram work the same exact way. The are all made by Borg Warner. The Raptor(and upper trim tremor) are the only ones that have a locking mechanism besides the clutches.

In fact, a lot of GM 1500’s dont even come with low range now. You have to get the offroad package or Trailboss trim to get 4Lo now.

I've noted single speed transfer case in Silverado custom and that u need trail boss to get low range. I guess that few people use their truck as a truck.

I meant XL/XLT trims for ford NON auto 4WD having actual locking transfer cases.
Clutch packs in a transfer case on an off-road package of a truck that can fit big tires and has tons of torque doesn't strike me as the greatest idea.
Especially for that kind of money

I don't think it's a case of people not using their "truck like a truck." Most things people use their truck for these days doesn't require 4 low.

Also, modern trucks have far more HP and TQ than older ones and the transmissions are an order of magnitude better....which makes 4 low irrelevant for most truck owners.

I dont use 4Lo a lot in my GX or F150 unless i am towing my trailer up a trail where i need the torque.

I do use it in my 4Runner all the time because its gutless and literally cannot get up hills under its own power in 4Hi

Of all the things that they have been known for... Being powerful is not something the 4Runner has ever been known for...haha. Although.... If they added about 100HP it would probably be a riot to drive.

Looks like they're available to order on the Ford build site. Anyone put in their order yet? And / or have an estimate delivery date?

I don't think anyone is actually fulfilling or allowing 'builds' from the factory. My dad just went to 3 places in the last month to look at a vehicle change, and they basically told him whatever he sees on the lots or online is all there is. No custom orders were allowed or even discussed. Pretty crappy, but I guess customer service for at least those places is not priority. They wouldnt even put him on a list for when a vehicle of his choice did show up. I dont suspect 'orders' will be happening any time soon. Maybe in a couple more years once the backlogged stuff is caught up.
