Im looking for a used truck, trying to stay around $20k, Im looking at a 2005 double cab tacoma 4x4 with 98k miles and the v6. The miles are a little higher than I want to go, but are the newer tacomas as reliable and bulletproof as the earlier ones? Outside of standard upkeep and maintenance can i expect to get to 200k miles with no major issues?

2143 miles and still going strong!:beer: Seriously, if you look at the unbelievable resale prices on these, there's a bunch of folk out there who think so. Part of it's going to depend on the previous owner and how well the truck was taken care of.

The 4.0 is proving to be a very reliable engine and possibly more reliable. IIRC, though, there were reportedly some issues with the head gaskets on the '05s.

Wouldn't literally trust my life to it in Africa if it weren't reliable.
Had a normally-aspirated FJ Cruiser with the 4.0L 1GR-FE, now have a Taco with the supercharged 4.0L 1GR-FE.
Great trucks, bulletproof reliability.

Hopefully I'm not threadjacking, but has the reliability of the 4.0 been diminished by the supercharger?

I've been looking for an answer to that same question as well. So far -noting it's been pretty much opinion- the answer's been that the SC doesn't have a negative impact on the the engine.

Just dropped my 2005 (bought new 7/2005) tacoma off today for the 90K service...sitting at 95K and I haven't had to do a thing...other than replace the lame factory suspension that sagged immediately in the rear...
Oil, 30 and 60K Services, tires, still original brakes...

We bought the right 2005 last fall.. I've posted the same question to TW about buying the 2005 over other years;
Take a look at the motor mounts up front and make sure they are still solid at the frame, the next years got re-inforcing that the 2005 didn't.
Count the Leaf springs to see if you have the reg 3 leaf or TSB 4 leaf package.
Otherwise the things I like about our 2005- no TPMS, no traction/stability gidgets, rear limited-slip is mechanic vs newer brake controlled..
By buying a 2005 over a 2009 we ended up paying it off in 5 months, being able to spend some on extras like the canopy and lights, already having the first and second scratches put on by the fpo..:sombrero:

I had a 08 crew cab TRD, the rear suspension is crap, and I had a ABS sensor go and left the truck in a limp mode go no where situation. Lots of blind spots and the interior is wicked uncomfortable for anything over a 2 hr ride. I sold it and went back to rovers with a LR3.

A makeover on the suspension for these seems a given. We'll hear about the occasional electronic PITA blips in every vehicle. The rest is pretty subjective. Plus, Rover doesn't offer a truck in the states.

Owned an 08 for 10,000 miles. I don't feel like the interior is up to the quality of the older trucks. Knob on the dash for 4WD is pretty lame but if you carry a few spare parts, even that can't stop you in the back country. Plan on replacing the rear suspension if that hasn't already been done and prob drive it for a long time. Just don't plan on towing huge loads or carrying a load of mulch without the truck feeling stressed. It will do it though!!!! The 01 reg cab that I have get's cramped sometimes but damn if it isn't reliable and I'm getting 22mpg around town.

I was very comfortable on my 28hr roundtrip I just took in my '10 taco. I also find it hilarious that you complained about the Tacoma's reliability.....and went to a Land Rover lol.
That is my truck. Now at 332k miles.
