I was traditionally against full-time 4WD or AWD. Since that is the only way a V8 4th Gen 4Runner was offered, I've had it for four years. I have learned to like it both on and off-highway. The option of the center differential, unlocked and locked, has proven to be beneficial to my use and driving environments.

Cory, with AWD, there are more parts moving that previously were not. So there will be wear and tear to those parts. I did not notice any difference in mileage, the EPA ratings for the Tundra and 200 series Land Cruiser are almost spot on, I think the Tundra might be rated slightly lower for highway, but it is a larger vehicle. As Redline mentions above, there are benefits to having an unlocked center differential. The biggy for me is that turning radius is greatly improved when unlocked vs having a locked center differential. The 4-runner system is the same in operation.

Brian would there be any disadvantage to having a fulltime transfer case, ie. Fuel mileage or wear and tear. Etc. Aside from on road traction what advantages do you gain from this? Lastly would this be a similar setup (not same part of course) to the new 4runner limited that has a full time case so would you realize the same advantages/disadvantages?

Cory

Thanks Guys, one last question....have you towed with your supercharger much? I've heard that the supercharger doest kill mileage too much if your not always on the petal, but what about towing? Assuming towing mileage cannot get any worse, maybe its better with the charger?

The supercharger has the potential to produce better than stock mileage if driven with a nice right foot. I'd say towing mileage is about the same for me at this point.

Brian, How difficult was it to modify the LC200 snorkel to fit the Tundra? I'm trying to plan a little trip for the summer and I'll have a multiple water crossings and don't want to replace the motor or get stuck in a very remote location when I'm not at the top of the food chain. Also, anything else you know that should be sealed? I believe I read the the starter or alternator sat pretty low, I forget which one and it's -40, so I'm not about to go a crawl around on the ground. I already did the rear diff ventilation extension and I believe the transfer case and front diff should be OK.

Thanks,
Jason

The 200 snorkel fits ok, good in some areas, not so good in others. It did required a little heating and reforming of the lower section to fit the fender acceptably, but there are still gaps. It is not something I would sell as a finished product. I'll snap some photos and let you be the judge. I might be going with fiberglass fenders soon. That equals a redo of the snorkel system, so this modified version may be available for a good deal. Drop me a PM if you are interested.

This is "truly" the BEST modified 2nd gen. Tundra without a doubt. :D
I my self will use some of the mods. provided in this very helpful post.

Waiting anxiously for your feedback on the KDSS because its one important upgrade I'm really looking forward to install on my 2010 DC 4X4.

Keep up the good work and good luck.

The Nitro 4.88 gears have arrived... so very shortly we'll be fully geared and locked. King Shocks is finishing up my first order, which includes some long travel internal bypass shocks for this rig. Pics asap.

Where'd you get the nitro gears?! I was told they were still a few months out! That would be awesome to get new gears in the truck before summer hits

Sorry, you will have to wait a bit longer for the full productions sets to arrive. Only two test sets of 4.88 gears were produced, the distributor was nice enough to give me the chance to try a set out. I'll be sure to let you know when they are available.
