80 or 100

The 5 speed does feel more powerful in the 03s even though there aren't any more ponies.

I have a 99 with 315s and stock gears and I just sold my 94 with 315s and 4.56s. Towing the 100 kicks the 80s tail hands down. There is really no comparision.

If you are going to do serious off roading with big rocks the 80 wins hands down. If you want to drive 80mph down a gravel road the 100 is your better bet.

Define your off road needs and then build your rig accordingly.

I'm actually thinking of selling my 100 already, it has only been 5 months. I'm building another Cruiser and I want even more towing power than the 100. My towing needs changed just recently with addition of the project Cruiser. If I do, it will be the most expensive Cruiser I will have ever owned as the prices have dropped significantly in the last 6 months to the point where I will lose big time. And I will miss it as it the finest road trip vehicle we have ever owned.

I agree, the 5-sp and V8 is a nice combo in my 4Runner too. Maybe it’s even better in the LC with 4.10 than my 3.73 gears. Though a stock LC 100 is heavier, my 4Runner has put on muscle and now weighs 5440-lbs, wet, every day.

Anyone know the gear ratios on the 4 verses 5 speed auto.

I'll tell ya what, if the lottery ever goes my way, a late model LC100 with the higher h.p. V-8 and 5 speed auto sure sounds like a nice ride.

Don't tempt me. :D

As far as the power improvement on the 100, I know it definatley has more power on paper 230/320 verses 212/275, but the 100 weighes a quarter ton more. Also the 100 appears to have slightly lower gearing 4.3 verseas 4.1 according to Slee's website, which is definately going to give it some advantage in the power feel department.

I guess it makes me wonder what the true difference between a bone stock 100 and bone stock 80 would be, if both had the same rear gearing. I'm sure the 100 would still easily be more powerful, but would it be "that" much more powerful?

The difference is HUGE. When I picked up my second 80 (the LX450) we raced around some. My 25,698,563 pound 100 on 35's without re-gearing (a 12% power disadvantage) blew the stock 80 away from the lights, up the hills and all over.
Now, the LX rides on 35's and has 4.88's (~9% power advantage over stock) and it still gets killed. My 100 also pulls away from my buddies with 35's 4.88's AND TRD supercharger.
Plus....when we pull away we are smooth while the 80's road and are rough.

So power wise....the numbers/specs dont' tell much.

FIREAXE: What type of trails do you run in your TJ? What do you like to do out there?

John,

In all good fun, last time I asked you this question on a similar thread. The thread was partially deleted.

Kevin,

Just curious if you care to share, why ONLY '98-99? I suspect it has something to do with TRAC/VSC...

Your point? I don't see how this helps our person in this thread? Scott won't let that same thing heppen in this forum.

Rear locker maybe...

I'd be worried about the exploding front diffs in the '98-'99, but they would be cheaper than a later model. Either way, someone might likely be replacing the front diff or adding a rear locker. Is a 4 pinion front diff from a later model retrofitable? I suppose a front ARB might solve the problem too.

I'm curious what the gas mileage difference is between a built and loaded down 80 verses a 100. I know my loaded 80 with stock gears and 33s gets between 9-12, city/highway combo. I'm curious what built 100s, like John's gets.

Yes, that is a "fix" if the 2-pinion design fails in a 98-99. From what I understand, the 2-pinion diff has been superseded by the 4-pinion in the Toyota parts system.

NOPE! The 4 pinion fails too! Basically if you have a 100 series you have a weak front diff and the way to fix it is an ARB.

Yes you can purchase the complete front diff 4-pin assembly from Toyota: =/- a grand (+labor+gaskets, etc). But the best approach is just to take your hopefully unbroken front diff and install the ARB locker as a preventative measure...and be done with it. This has been discussed to death and beyond over on MUD.

My MPG with my heavily laden rig (the 4.7L V8 typically gets better MPG):

:iagree: Even if I didn't need a front locker I'd put an arb just to strengthen the front diff.
