Nice 4Runner, each 3rd Gen T4R post on Expo makes my wife's Forester a little more scared..

Thank you. Lol... just something about them Toyotas.

Loooks a lot like mine but without a dented tailgate..lol. Nice find! It took me 4 months to find my 2000 limited w/ locker, your lucky you found yours so quickly.

My first 4Runner had a dent in the tailgate, as well as the bumper. It was such an eye sore, but I didn't want to pay to get it fixed. I like this one a bit better, since the body is completely straight. Now I just need to find a Sport Hood!

One week felt like three months. I got in touch with the guy 15 minutes after it was posted, drove an hour to check it out, and put a Deposit down on it two hours later. Couldn't have worked out any better!

Welcome back to the bright side! New ride is lookin' good.

Ah, thanks my friend. I had you in mind, with that sweet trip of yours planned in the coming months, when I purchased it. Now we out to go out and about when your in the neighborhood.

And so it begins.

Goodyear Duratracs LT265/75/16 Load Range C, on order! Not sure what I am going to do wheel wise. I planned on OEM 5-Stars but I've seen a lot of others with. I might keep the wheels that are on there for now. OR search for some LC80 wheels, or Steel FJ/Tacoma wheels. Decisions... decisions...

About the bumper....... Portland craigslist is selling bumper kits..... Just have to find a buddy to weld it up for you.

Just another option.

I like your list of cars you have owned. Great fine here too. Enjoy modding...

Thanks. They've all been great to me and have served their purpose, and served them well.

Ah, yeah I've seen those. My mind is set on a ARB Tacoma/Shrockworks bumper. They've always been my two favorites... you never know what might turn up on CList.

Good choice on the tires/tire size. Ive heard many great things about them. Also, the steelies look ************!

As I have. I've liked my BFG All Terrains on my Jeep, liked the Toyo Open Country A/T2s on the previous 4Runner, and thought I would continue to try something new with these Duratracs. Discount Tire Direct- EBay store, has a great deal going on right now. Bought a set of 2, saved $100. Bought another set of 2, saved another $100 (Promotion code:CMOTORS0314). I ended up saving $200, and came out to $652 with free shipping! Score.

Steelies are my favorite look, but the additional weight scares me away. We'll see what CList turns up though... as I can never pass up a good deal.

Mason,

I'm not sure what the 5 stars or similar wheels weigh, but with the exact same tire as you, my wheel and tire combo comes in at 73 lbs, subtract 45 for the c-range duratrac and you end up with 28 lbs for a steel wheel, which is actually less than i thought. I have been considering dropping them in favor of a lighter wheel and tire, but think i would need to be in the vicinity of 20 lbs for me to really feel a difference, i believe the SCS wheels are pretty close to that weight. I'm waiting to hear back from a friend on the what his LC80 series wheels weigh. I know with rotating weight, you can feel a pretty significant difference, so I'm curious to see what some stock aluminum rims weigh....

And great choice, again.

I can think of several reasons to favor alloys over steels but weight isn't one of them.

If you are talking about a racing vehicle, then saving weight wherever you can makes sense. When you're racing, 5 lbs can mean the difference between winning and losing.

But for what most of us do? The difference in weight between a steel wheel and an alloy is going to be, what, maybe 40 lbs total? On a vehicle that weighs nearly 4,000 lbs at the curb before you load any gear on it?

If you carry a fridge full of food and beverages that probably weighs 50lb right there.

I can understand wanting to reduce unsprung weight, but are you operating your vehicle so close to the edge of its capabilities that an extra 10lbs (at most) per wheel is really going to matter?

I don't think you're paying enough credence to the negative effects of unsprung weight. The third GEN isn't exactly snappy off the line, plus with a heavier larger size tire I certainly would see no reason to go to steel wheels.

Especially considering he's already got a nice set of alloys and the five-star OEM rims are fairly easy and inexpensive to locate, not to mention look awesome!

Nice looking truck! Here's my wife's 3rd gen:

Wow, that is a great deal for Duratracs. That is the same size and tire that I was planning on buying....which I was going to wait until summer but that deal is too good to pass up. Thanks for the heads up.

Lots of good insight here on wheels. Neat to here different perspectives on alloy vs. steel. I like it! 5 Stars are my favorite OEM wheels, that are affordable, but I see a ton frequenting forums (T4R or ExPo) and I just want something else different to stray away from the pack :).

Indeed. I did not plan on ordering tires so soon, but $200 off makes it much more affordable and now I get the tire that I was seeking. I did not want a Load Range E or else I probably would've gone with the Falken Rocky Mountain ATS 3. I had LR E on my last (Toyo Open Country AT2s) 4Runner and it was rough. Enjoy your new tires!

I know exactly what you mean. The previous owner of my 99 had backed over a mailbox, so there was a dent in the left side of the rear bumper as well as one just below the rear window. Most people probably did not notice, but it drove me crazy. My paint was also toast as the previous owner apparently never washed it or waxed it (and left every bird dropping ever dropped on it so that it ate through the paint and made blemishes all over the hood, roof, and A-D pillars). I ultimately sold it because I couldn't stand the thought of putting more time and money into it with it looking like it did. I like to keep my junk as pristine as possible, so it had to go.

I was so close to picking up a cherry 2001 I found with 40k miles on it (in late 2012), but decided against it as I regularly tow more than my 99 was comfortable with.

I love your new ride and can't wait to see what kind of change you make with it. Congrats!

I'm actually now out of the Subaru as well, and looking for a 3rd gen 4runner. How did you find such a great vehicle? Autotrader?

I was worried about mpg and range, how's yours?

Why no interest in the 4th gen with the 4.0litre ?
