age without training wheels

I had both my twins riding at bout 5 years old without training wheels. First started with the training wheels so low that sometimes the bike would stop due to uneven surface which would lift the rear tire. Then we moved them up a 1/4" at a time, and told them to ride without making the training wheels touch and make noise. After a couple weeks , I realized that the training wheels were up 3 to 4 inches above where they needed to be, so I pulled them, and they have been riding ever since without them.

my oldest daughter learned to ride without training wheels at about 4. same with my son. we just pushed 'em..n told em to keep pedaling:D and they did. started out on some grass first, then they got the hang of how to keep it upright. dont stop pedaling :D . then they knew how to control it and stop. took about half an hour for them to get it.

of course they started out on 12" wheels. my sons fully outgrown that now and is due for a new bike. i think we'll pass on the 14" wheel bike and move up to the 16" wheels. thats the route we took with my oldest daughter...works well.

just push em...they'll be fine. just make sure they're wearing a helmet ;)

never had 'em. learning is quicker when there's consequenses.

training wheels and waterwings contribute to the "pussification of the American male".

My older son dropped them at age 4, entirely due to "pressure" from a friend of his the same age dropping them. That son is 5 now and regularly mountain bikes with me on somewhat rugged terrain. Pic is of my 3 year old who just learned a few weeks ago, and is out on the trails now, too...

All depends on the kids, and how much practice/interest they have, and what early experience they get. Those no-pedal rides are sweet!

my 3.5YO boy has a Norco run bike. No training wheels and no pedals, no brakes! He can glide prety far now and takes hills faster than he should. I did find that we put him on a buddies bike with training wheels and he didn't know how to pedal! So he now has a cheap(free) trike that he has learned to pedal on and then goes running around on his run bike. I figure next summer will be on the regular bike and no training wheels. I hope.

Only problem was the damn runbike was over $100 but when we sell it will get most of that back.
