So I've being thinking about this the last few weeks. I discussed it with some friends, who all think....WHY.

My thought is to hang a stretcher like apparatus from the roll bar. With the seats folded all the way back it would give me about 30 inches of head room. I know it's not alot but it is enough, and would be alot more if the top was off.:D

So is it crazy? has anyone tried this?

Sounds interesting to me! My immediate thoughts would be a break down fabric stretcher with no legs. You could pull it apart when you do not need it. Sounds easy enough to try. I look forward to pictures.

So, This is sort of what I am thinking. But instead of just a single making it as wide as possible

Just an idea, but why not tie one end of a hammock to the roll bar behind the front seats and the other end to a hitch mounted support. Something like a tailgate extender used for hauling long lumber would work if it was not made at a right angle to give you more length for the hammock. That would be easy to break down each morning and should support a lot of weight.

The bad part would be that the jeep would be open to any foul weather.

I thought about hanging a traditional hammock in my 07 Ulimited for my 3yo and that would give me more room to sleep underneath her.
Suspend it from the windshield tie down loop to the rear part of the roll bar.

I'd be afraid of drowning. My kids pee a lot. haha!!

I've looked at these, I do have a a couple of tents. I was more thinking that it would be nice to be able to stay in the truck during some winter trips. Also for those times when you don't plan on setting up a full camp. Also I like the idea of doing some stealth camping on some long drives accross country when you only need a few winks.

I am was thining the same thing but for my husky:victory: then realized that it would just be easier for me to go up top than try and convince him to stay up there.

maybe a better idea?...

hang from the side of the jeep long ways...weld a mount at say the right front bumper frame area and the same to the right rear...then have two poles to go inside each mount and hang hammock on there...able to vision it?

the hammock to use....Hennsey (sp)...awsome hammock and able to use in any weather

set up would take up very little valuable cargo space

...just my 2 cents

I think that would work just fine. You might have to play with the lengths of the hanging cords to get it all level. Maybe use some quick connect clips so you could hang it in minimal time once you found the ideal setup.

I would stick a foam sleeping pad under you if its a little cold. With just air under you it will get a little cold.

Its nice when you don't have to get out to set-up for sleeping.

On my dodge the rear sleeping platform has opened up all kinda of stealth camping and quick camping ideas. It is super nice not to have to get a motel when all you want is a few hours of good sleep.

That being said. The sleeping platform takes up way to much space to keep the truck useful for everything else, especially with the hard camper shell.

Decision Made.
After seeing everyone else's Rigs on here and being throughly jealous I figure it's my turn to through my hat in the ring and see what I can come up with.

I'll keep everyone updated as soon as I get some headway. Keep your thoughts comming.

Anyone have any good places to get a light duty canvas material? Maybe marine canopy material?
