Any built 300tdi D1 owners here?

PM'd you.

Well Gregory, dont keep us all in suspense....why did you ask? Is there a big secret? LOL

Yes that climb out of the valley on I-17 is a ***** with just the Rover. When we moved from Phoenix, I towed a fully loaded 6x12 UHaul double axle and our 02 D2 Rover did not like that one bit. It was almost as bad as pulling the same size trailer with our 96 D1 out of Bullhead City in July 2005 when it was 125 degrees. Fortunately, it never overheated even with my foot in the floor all the way to Kingman.

If you commute into Phx for work you are supposed to have an emissions test even if where you live doesn't otherwise require it. Miniscule chance of getting caught but it's still something to be considered in case he's the unlucky one. He's not going to be passing an emissions test in a 99 D1 with a 300TDi or any other pre-96 engine/electrical set up.

That's why I asked where he worked since he's still considering his choices on a swap.

True, but if you have seen the big brown haze hanging over PHX then you'd understand why. Though with a metropolitan area of 5M people, I dont think the commuters from the outlying areas are going to make that big of an impact on the air quality. Once you leave the metro area (PHX proper + the contiguous cities/muncipalities) the population thins out quickly. Sorry to get off subject.

I am still weighing my options on sourcing a full 300tdi conversion kit.

If anyone has any suggestions or recommendations, I am all ears. :sombrero:

If you haven't already talked to them, the following were helpful to me when I was considering a 300TDi swap in my 91 RR.

www.globallandrovers.com
www.landroverimport.com
www.urbanlandcruisers.com

Note, urbanlandcruisers.com also deals with Land Rover diesel conversions. For some reason their land rover specific website doesnt work anymore.

You might also look at www.bushducks.com go to the mechanics page, select USA and click on the 3rd check box underneath for diesel conversions, you will get a list of 28 shops nationwide that say they specialize in diesel conversions. You might contact some of them and get their advice.

Thanks for the info. I have been talking with both urbanlandcruisers and landroverimport and so far they have both been very helpful.
I have also been emailing with a few 300tdi swap owners.

The Bushducks.com did have quite the list. I will reach out to a few of the shops although I don't really expect them to give me to much help being as I'm not a paying customer and all. But I don't blame them, that's business. Thanks again for the help.

Don't know why I didn't think of this, but you might also consider calling rover techs in scottsdale. Talk to Kevin. He was the master mechanic at lr north scottsdale, he's also from the uk incidently. Lastly, there's a guy in Las Vegas, bill Goodman owner of kensington motorcars, who is also a lr master mechanic, from the uk too. He's gig a lot more experien e than Kevin but they're both good. Do note that bill talked me out of the diesel conversion. But he knows his stuff.

Yup, not only is it technically illegal on a federal level to tamper with OBDII systems and or install a motor older than your model yr (pretty stiff fines for a shop) it will become increasingly harder to pass emissions anywhere as more States and municipalities conform to the clean air act.
Not only that but installation in an OBDII vehicle is a royal pain in the ******** with all the systems that need input from the engine ECU. Much better idea is to stick with the V8. If you have to have a diesel find a nice pre OBDII vehicle and go for it.:ylsmoke:

You bring up some good points. And the legality of it sure does need to be considered. You are also correct about more and more municipalities doing emissions testing. In my particular case it will not effect me.... yet. I also don't plan on selling it. Given the two main reasons you bring up, the vehicle would not be worth anywhere near what I would have into it.

I am curious to hear more about the ecu interactions with the truck. Can you give me a list of the items that would need to be dealt with?
I am in the middle of emailing with three different guys that have done the D1 tdi re-power. One of them is in a 98. All three have agreed that the pre 96 is/would be easier. I am going to try and get some details from the guy with 98 as far as ecu goes.

It really is hard to not argue with staying with the v8, that's for sure. :) Thanks again.

You may not plan on it, but what if circumstances dictate that you have to sell it? Then you are stuck.
