Anyone using a new Ford Superduty with the 6.2L?

Like the thread title says I am curious if anyone is using a new 2017 or 2018 Ford Superduty with the 6.2L as their vehicle for getting out in the hills exploring and such. Currently I am driving newer Ram and Ford diesels and the continual issues with both trucks has me wary of trying yet another diesel, especially since the majority of my driving involves hauling all of my gear in the truck instead of towing heaver trailers around. It is hard to dispute the ease with which the new diesels cruise down the road when the trucks are operating correctly! I see several different Ram Powerwagons on the forum that members are getting out and using, but not too much on the gas Ford Superduty trucks as all of the builds appear to have the 6.7 Powerstroke. I do like the size and comfort of my current Ram 2500 6.7 but the simplicity of a gas engine in the new 3/4 ton trucks is tempting.

Don't Have the Ford. But I am running a 2500 Ram with 6.4 Hemi. I have had the truck 2.5 years now and love it. I did change the gearing to 4.56's for better pulling of the 5th wheel. I also run a Northstar 850sc camper on the truck and I have plenty of power and mpg really is not to bad. My previous truck was a dodge with the cummins. It took a little while to learn the difference in driviing the hemi. Just let her rev and don't worry about it. Should add last trip I took with empty truck netted 18 mpg over 650 miles

Not an owner but the mine I work for has quite a few of these. They won't buy the diesels! Trouble free engines, pretty powerful, that have been around a while.

Go to any mine in Nevada and what you'll see is fleets of Fords. Used to be all Superduties but now quite a few of the F150s are showing up also.

And before anyone accuses me of being prejudiced - my personal "heavy duty" pickup is a Dodge Ram dually with the Cummins 5.9. My daily driver is an F150. I don't think you can buy a "bad" pickup these days.

I have 2 of them. Ones a mostly unloaded 2017 F250. The other is a 11,000# service truck (Reading body).

If you're towing less than 12,000#, the 6.2 is a viable option. My POV only tows around 8000#. If you tow over 10,000# opt for the 4.30 gears.

The Cummins and Ford Scorpion are pretty even. The Ford 6.2L though, is a bit above the other gas trucks IME. If you're hauling all of your gear in the bed of the truck, I don't see how that's going to be heavy enough to warrant the diesel. There's some charm to the simple lightweight gas engines as well. If I ever need to go diesel, then I'll go DRW at the same time.

I’ve had quite a few gas 3/4 ton trucks in the past ten years, and currently in a 17 6.7 F-350. If I’d have driven a 6.2 before purchasing my diesel I very well may have gone gasser instead. I’ve driven a few 11-16’ Model 6.2s and would have never considered one. The newer 6.2 with lower torque curve and more power is a pleasure to daily drive, even in a truck as heavy as these. It’s the only gas 3/4 ton truck I’d drive, and considering I’m driving a deleted 6.7 I’d like to think that’s pretty impressive.

Buliwyf, the "charm" of a simpler gas engine is what has me looking to make the change. The Ford F250 6.7 I drive has been constant problems with DEF heaters, wiring harness, multiple exhaust gas sensors, ECM, sending units, issues with the fuel/water separator and sensors, and the list goes on of repairs over the last few years. The 2500 Cummins I have while I like a lot about the truck has been plagued with issues on the cooling system and CEL that have no code associated which baffles me.

What type of mileage are you getting in your 2017?

Wait until the ford gas 7.0 comes out, or I would go power wagon, hard to beat the 6.4 Hemi and front and rear lockers among other things set the power wagon as a great expedition vehicle.

I bought a 2017 F350 4x4 CC long bed 6.2 back in December. I've had diesels, a 7.3 non-turbo (1990), and a 7.3 turbo (1999). They were both incredible trucks. Great mileage and reliable. There is no way I will touch one of the new diesels. The motor itself is a $9000 option, and it's space shuttle complexity. My mileage is no where near what the 7.3 could pull, but that's just the way it is. I don't want all the expense and complexity of a diesel. A friend has a 2016 F250 with the diesel. He get 15 unloaded. If I drive all freeway, I can get 14. Around here, diesel is .30/gallon more, you have to add DEF, and an oil change requires 50 quarts (well, I might be stretching the oil change a little). The friend doesn't care about cost or complexity. He's loaded with cash, and if it gives him too much trouble, he'll just buy another one.

I have thought about both those options. Always a bit nervous about the first year of new engines, even with a new option like the 7X. The reduced payload on the Powerwagons has been what's kept me away from that option previously. When comparing the payload in some of the 3/4 diesels powered truck the payload isn't much different than a Powerwagon though. Did you compare the 6.4 Hemi to the Ford 6.2, or were you wanting the Powerwagon and therefore ended up with the 6.4 Hemi?

CodyB, I'm running a 2014 6.2 F350 xl for my work/DD/play rig, so far, so good. I drove a few newer (17) 6.2's and they were really nice. I wish I could've afforded a newer one. I don't tow anything, but I have a lot of weight in there usually. So far the gas motor has been fine. I've been out exploring in it plenty, 4lo and I've never had to engage the locker. The only issue I have are the crank up windows, some technology is good! Good luck with your search.

I’ve got a 14 6.4 Ram and love it. Great motor. Very peppy engine. Like someone else said towing under 12000 pounds the gas 3/4 tons are good options. 6.4 is a rev happy motor. Just let it scream and it will tow whatever you put behind it.

I got the last of the 5.9 Cummins by two months. It and the truck have been great.
However,if I got a new one it would be the Ford 6.2. So a 7.0 is coming out?
Even the new gassers with the stop/start feature is spooky. I was next to an F-150 yesterday at an intersection. The truck started up and I thought what?
Cylinder shutdown same way.

My work truck is a 2017 XL crew cab long bed with the 6.2. It easily pulls 8k worth of boat and trailer with power to spare. 48 gallon fuel tank is awesome. Power is more than enough. My mileage average has been around 10 without the boat, 8 with the boat. However I suspect civilian use would see better. What is kind of cool about this truck is it’s totally manual. Manual windows, manual locks, manual mirrors, manual transfer case, and manual hubs. Rubber floor and vinyl seats too. The only “option” is AC.

My only gripe is the TPMS is set based on towing pressure recommendations. When I’m not towing for an extended period I drop the tires down to 38 psi and the light stays on. At least the truck will tell you the tire pressure and it is spot on.

Would I buy one? Maybe but it would be a short bed. I’ll be in the market for a 3/4 ton when my 4Runne is paid for. It would be between this as a Ram.
