I haven't looked into the legalities of it, but how is transferring a DVD that I bought into Itunes any different than transferring a music CD that I bought into Itunes?

I paid for the DVD and I'm still just using it for personal use.

It's not but the movie industry managed to make the actual act of "ripping" the dvd illegal, it's not an issue of how it's stored and used, although I am sure you could get into trouble that way too.

I hate it, but have to admit that whoever thought that up was on their "A" game that day.

It's copyright law, it doesn't have to make sense.

IIRC it is the act of circumventing the trivial protection on the DVD itself that invokes the DMCA act.

Preorders for the iPad begin Friday, March 12. Delivery of pre-orders starts April 3.

Presumably, in early April you will be able to visit an Apple Store and have a hands-on experience with the iPad before you purchase.

Apple showed a new ad featuring the iPad during the Oscars award show.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qiUs8HQu_1o

Brad Linder of liliputing.com points out that the ad shows how the iPad
is a little difficult to hold in the right position. It's too heavy to hold in one
hand for very long. Putting the iPad flat on a table doesn't provide the
optimum viewing angle for the LCD screen. The new ad shows people
sitting in awkward positions with their knees up to provide an angled
surface to rest the computer on.

Maybe furniture makers will produce a line of "iPad chairs" that position
the body in a "hips down, knees up" to make it easy to hold the iPad in
place!

Apple opened the web page for iPad orders this morning. It looks like they booked 50,000 orders in the first two hours! For the moment, iPad orders are limited to two per customer.

[Edit: Washington Post says 90,000 in first 6 hours]
[Edit 2: CNN now estimates 120,000 iPads sold during the first day]

http://www.appleinsider.com/article...ours_apple_tv_bumped_mysterious_app_icon.html

Apple announced prices for a few accessories. I expect third parties will make all these available for less once the iPad is released.

-- iPad Dock, no keyboard $29
has audio line out for powered speakers
charges iPad through USB to computer or mains power
use Bluetooth to link a keyboard and mouse

-- iPad Dock with built-in keyboard $69

-- Apple Bluetooth keyboard $69
Works up to 30 feet away from iPad

-- iPad Connector to VGA Adapter $29
You guessed it, outputs video from iPad to other devices with VGA input
Works with Dock or attached directly to iPad, provides 1024 by 768 pixels output
Also available for Composite and Component inputs, $49 each
(Why no HDMI?)

-- iPad 10W USB Power Adapter $29
Charges iPad through the Dock faster than via USB from computer
One is included with the iPad, but you might want a second one for another location

Gizmodo has a great pair of articles saying why and why not to buy an iPad.
http://gizmodo.com/5491901/the-litany-of-ipad-resistance and
http://gizmodo.com/5491903/the-litany-of-ipad-submission

Buy now because:
-- iPad's a bargain: an eBook reader, a web browser, a media player, and a gaming system all in one for $499 (and up).
-- 150,000 iPhone apps, and the new iPad apps are going to be amazing
-- No Flash? Not to worry. Youtube works.
-- $30 unlimited AT&T data plan with no contract is a bargain
-- early adopter chic, you'll be the life of the party
-- you can always sell later if you don't like it

Don't buy now because:
-- The price will drop
-- First Gen is always beta, Second Gen will be much better
-- It's no laptop, but it costs as much
-- Can't run programs unless Apple approves, including Flash.
-- The competition isn't available yet. Microsoft Courier will be cool!
-- The size is weird, too big to pocket and too small to do any work on.
-- No keyboard, typing onscreen may be a problem
-- No reviews yet, why not wait a few weeks
-- It's just a big iPod Touch, save $$ by buying the original
-- iPad 3G Data Plan is cheap, but you probably are paying some carrier for a 3G phone already -- wait until tethering is figured out

Apple investor/fanboy report:

After an avalanche of pre-production orders on the first day, orders for the iPad have dropped back to about 1,000 per hour, according to analyst Philip Elmer-DeWitt. At this rate, Elmer-Dewitt predicts Apple will sell one million iPads by the end of April.

http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2010/03/15/apple-ipad-orders-drop-sharply/

Analysts estimate Apple makes between $200 and $450 per iPad sold, based on the cost of components used to build the device.

Apple sold 8.7 million iPhones and 3.4 million Macintosh computers in the last quarter of 2009, the best sales result in company history.

I'm not sure if this is environmentally friendly or not...on one hand, if they take back all iPads with worn out batteries, properly recycle the battery, and sell the used iPad as refurbished, then it's a good thing, and we score a cheaper iPad to boot. But if they are not properly caring for the depleted battery and just tossing the whole apparatus, then it's doubly bad because you have the embodied energy of two devices to take into account.

Unconfirmed rumor from Wall Street Journal staff say that the newspaper
will offer an iPad version for $18 a month. The online version costs $12
a month today, so let's hope that the iPad version offers some additional
features!

In unrelated news, Fusion Garage reports that its JooJoo slate, with 12 inch
color screen, Intel Atom processor, and nVidia Ion graphics, has started shipping
(at last). The Fusion Garage web site still lists the starting price
at $499, the same as the basic iPad.

that's me in the iPad ad!

If you blink you'll miss me and even if you don't blink, you'll still miss me! I'm in the NY Times article about kayaking in the FL keys that they show at about the 10 second mark in the ad. 3 people standing in the flats with their kayaks behind them. I'm the one in the middle.

Here's the thread I made about the article when it appeared last year in the Times:

Pre-ordered my iPad yesterday using the cash the ad agency/Apple paid me. Bought the wifi 64gb. Figure I'll use my home's wifi or my Verizon mifi when out of the home and skip the higher cost and data charge for the 3G version.

Here are a few tidbits as we wait for iPad delivery day, Saturday, April 3.

I read several reports that Best Buy will carry the iPad, and will have them for sale on April 3. Since the Apple stores will be mobbed by people picking up their iPads, you might consider heading to Best Buy if you're interested to look at one before making a purchase decision. [edit: confirmed that most Best Buy stores will have at least a few iPads for sale on April 3. Doors open at 9am.]

Ship date for orders of iPads placed today has slipped from 4/3 to 4/12, according to the Apple order page.

A blog connected to Fortune Magazine speculates that there have been 240,000 iPads ordered for delivery so far.
http://brainstormtech.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2010/03/26/ipad-week-two-240000-pre-orders

A different blog says a similar number of iPads have been ordered for in-store delivery.
http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2010...der-numbers-top-150000-reservations-a-success

That means upwards of 400,000 iPads have been ordered in three weeks, with a week to go before delivery starts. Looks like the level of 500,000 orders is within reach by opening day.

If Apple makes $200 per iPad, that would mean an injection of $100 million into Apple's revenue stream on delivery day. Not bad for a product that is essentially an iPod Touch with a faster processor and a larger screen!
