Apple Tablet: iPad

Sports Illustrated and Time developed prototype magazines for the iPad.
Both are highly oriented to visual display of information. So I think it's
possible to successfully lay out the Overland Journal for the iPad without
too many compromises. I'd certainly trade a few aesthetics for embedded
video and hyperlinks! The limitations of ePub format may be rendered
moot if other magazine publishers get behind a new format.

Would the JeepFreak format work for OJ, Does that work on iPad? (Not sure if it uses Flash or AJAX or HTML5...)

At the TED conference this week, Wired Magazine announced that
they will produce an electronic version of the magazine for the iPad.
No details were provided, such as what ebook format would be used,
or what a subscription would cost.

Apparently "there's an app for that" for the annual SI swimsuit edition...

Only a month to go until Apple is supposed to start shipping
the iPad. Apple should start taking orders soon. (You'll have
to wait an additional month to buy the models with 3G modem.)

Announcements of iPad-only apps have started. For
example, the Associated Press has announced an app for iPad
that will allow individuals to receive AP articles directly. Like
many apps produced by publishing companies, the AP app will
require a paid subscription.

Wired Magazine demonstrated an iPad version of the magazine
recently. It's based on Adobe AIR, a tool that helps create
documents with multimedia content that run outside the browser.

iPad owners can choose from existing iPhone apps, too. The
iTunes store passed 150,000 Apple-approved apps a couple of
weeks ago.

Anyone else got iPad fever? Which model (WiFi only, WiFi plus
3G) do you prefer?

I'm of like mind but am so tempted - I can really see this device being a useful part of my life.

Apparently the SDK has the hooks for the camera(s) in it. I wouldn't be surprised to see the v1 have at least one camera.

If v1 had a camera I would be much more interested in the iPad, as it is now, less functional than my iPhone! With a camera, it would really fit a useful niche in my household. I saw something on engadget or similar site where an ipad had been stripped down and there were the three holes near the top EXACTLY like the MacBookPro. They even took a replacement sensor unit from a MBP and it fit in perfectly. The hardware is there, reports are the software is there, just need the marketing team from Apple to be onboard.

I hope Apple doesn't do too many bonehead v1 release goofs like the headphone port on the v1 iphone....

I just don't know......
I'm waffling.....

I really like the idea, I really like the design, but.......

If it only had a integrated camera for video conferencing/skype and a cd/dvd drive.......

I was really excited about this device and had waited to purchase a laptop until the ipad was officially announced to make sure that it wasn't "the one", and then shortly after the ipad press event, I went and bought a 13" macbook pro.

Hopefully Apple can tweak version 2 to suit my needs a little better.

I still predict that apple is gonna sell a butt-load of these things.
And by the way, I LOVE the new macbook........

I want to stress to you that the iPad is not a replacement for a full fledged notebook computer. It is a not a technical workstation. It is a light duty input/ouptut device.

CDs and DVDs? How quaint - I thought they disappeared with floppies? ;) Seriously though, optical drives consume too much power and are too bulky. You will never see one in a iP* device.

Understood, but the fact that you aren't able to rip DVDs into iTunes without using some hokey third party software is ridiculous. The ipad is touted as a fabulous movie watching experience, yet you can't watch any of the movies that you already own. For me, with kids, I like to have a movie player on the go. That's why I decided on the MacBook.

Sure, that's fair. Once your movie is ripped into iTunes you should be able to play it on your iPad.

FWIW, the hokey third party software (Handbrake is pretty col considering...) is required because it is illegal to transfer movies from DVD to your computer and as such Apple won't have any part of it.

The obvious answer is to rent movies from the ITMS to view on your iP*.

I wish Apple would put optical drives in the Apple TV.
