"If you lose cell service do you also lose gps capability?"

The iPad 3G models have assisted GPS, which means the cell service helps the GPS receiver get a fix of position faster than it might when using the satellite signals alone. However, the GPS does work without cell service.

There are a number of iPad topo/mapping programs (apps bleh) out there, some of which allow 'offline' storage of the maps, so from a data standpoint, you have options for offline use.

As for GPS, I think Haven said there is no GPS in the WiFi version, and the 3G GPS is assisted, which some people have said works outside service, while others have had issues (user or computer, idk)...we'll just have to wait and see...

From what I can tell, no aftermarket GPSs out for iPad yet, but I wonder if some of the iPhone/iTouch will work? That's something someone is going to have to try and let us know (Haven?)...I do think that accessories will be much more expensive because they are 'iPad' just like Hummer accessories are more expensive just because of the name...we'll all just have to live with that...

I think the iPad will be great for a lot of people, ok for others, and some will hate it because it's the Yankees/Duke/etc...

The 3G one will have GPS when there is no cell service. This is a function that iphones (3GS) have.

hmmm... I like that. I run all windows 7 so I wonder if the up coming Slate will do the same thing as far as the sat link. The Ram mount is pretty slick, but I am not sure I would want it in my windshield. it is big enough that a cop could write you up for having an obstruction to your view lol. Otterbox will have to get together with Ram and design one that fits the iPad while in an otterbox. My cell phone is supposed to have a sat assist. I may have to try it out with tracks or something like that.
With the exception of a few key features i would have liked to have, the iPad looks like a cool gadget. I hope those that buy one report after some desent outdoor use.

Question. I see that there is an available iPad USB and a SD card reader for importing photo's onto the iPad. Does anyone know if you can upload and store RAW image files on the iPad?

Edit: Never mind, just saw this.
The iPad Camera Connection Kit gives you two ways to import photos and videos from a digital camera: using your camera's USB cable or directly from an SD card. iPad supports standard photo formats, including JPEG and RAW.

Sweet!!!

remember guys, wait for the 3G + GPS model.

I am bummed that the initial specs changed to indicate no GPS on the non-3G model. I need to swap mine out now.

The ram mounts are cool but I played with an ipad this week and held it up to the dash to see how it would look. Lets just say it will not go on the dash of many vehicles. It takes up way too much windshield space to be used on the dash of 98% of all vehicles. A goose neck ram mount or something similar to a laptop mount would be good but a windshield mount is very unpractical. The screen size is roughly the same as a closed netbook (its just thinner and without the keyboard). If you don't have room to mount a netbook in your rig chances are space will be limited on the ipad too.

However, its small size would lend itself to just referring to it when needed.

Check out post #103 for pictures of what I am talking about...(this is not mine but you will get the point)

Mounting

I'm think that a flexy mount orignating near the passenger left knee and holding thing in front of the stereo sort of right middle will be the ticket in a 4runner. I really want one of these things.

I wonder if it would be better to get a wifi w/separate GPS instead of the built-in 3G/GPS, assuming you don't need/use the 3G.

My thinking is that's $130 spent on what is probably a lower-spec GPS (non-SirfIII or IV), when I'm guessing you'll soon be able to buy all kinds of external GPSs for the iPad, and with plenty of storage space, you should be able to d/l maps ahead of time (or find a program with full installed maps)...might be worth it to go that route for better GPS if you don't need 3G, right?

My understanding is that the GPS chip in the iPad is pretty decent.

People get hung up on the "assisted" part of the name. Assisted means that it falls back to cell and wifi triangulation when there are no satellites available in line of sight (e.g. stuck between two tall buildings).
