Around the world in my Icon. Looking for ideas.

This is defiantly the place where anyone can come and gather information, in fact it has supplied me with tons of info and inspiration. However most people on here that I have encountered, especially the land cruiser group and humble guys and gals. I think your money is no option, hiring a driving coach mindset is a little annoying, you probably could have gotten the same info with a much more mellow post.

It's awesome that you have the means to have such an adventure and that funding is not a problem, I would like to be in the same spot one day- as I'm sure just about everyone on here would as well. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood because it will take me about 6 months to save for a front bumper. In fact I have a great idea! Bring your Fj to San Diego, I'll take you out to the desert and give you all the driving/repair/recovery lessons you want, you just supply the armor for my rig :)

Honestly, I am sorry if I came across as overbearing or pompous. Simply put, I did not want to mince words about trying to save money on this build, as it is not an issue. Your offer for the desert is outstanding. I may take you up on it. Is there a place to land a Twin Commander around your training facility? I'd probably have the rig brought in on a flatbed.

Uh, was this a bad idea? My researchers told me that engine was a fine option for my build. What did I miss?

Lol you are too much. I don't have a training facility. I am in the Marine Corps and I doubt they would allow you to land anything on base. I work all week so we can go play on the weekends. Just jump in your cruiser, come on down and we will go from there. I'd offer you a place to stay, but I live in a tiny duplex on base that I have a feeling you wouldn't care for much ;)

On a serious note, if you come to San Diego I'll show you some cool stuff in Anza Borrego or death valley for free.

Oh! SEMPERtoy...Marines! I get it. How droll. That is okay. Perhaps I can rough it and ride in the cab of the flatbed. While I appreciate the offer of lodging, and have indeed spent some time in smallish confines...I would not impose on you. Schedule is tight but I will look at a calendar and maybe the future holds a date we can meet.

I guess some of you don't recognize the name Smails. As in Judge Smails, from Caddyshack.

I had the original vortec upgraded to the Toyota 5L-E that was robbed from a H200-series, which conveniently rolled into a ravine overseas. I had a number of spotters looking out for one for over a year. It was a tricky conversion, but the outcome is a reliable chug with separate tanks for vegi & dino fuel.

I'm not surprised the big wagon would toss itself in a ravine. A 200 series would suck with a 5l. How's the 97HP treating you in the ICON? I can just imagine you jettisoning non-essential weight such as the cup-holders while smoking your way up Donner Pass on the way to the rest of the world.

<edit> I now see you mean Hilux 200. My apologies. It wouldn't struggle so badly

You may want to have Icon increase strength on a lot of the suspension components. From what I have seen the brackets they use as well as how it is welded to the axles and frame is on the weak side. You wouldn't want a link to fail you in the middle of BFE. Also Johnny Joints are cheap and tend to wear out fast so I would carry a half dozen of those with you on your around the world trip.

Oh and since you have all this money and time. How about you use some of that to learn how to work on the truck yourself? You are going to need that on your 2yr trip. Coil overs require rebuilding every 50,000 miles or so, do you know how to rebuild a coil over?

You also will want to look long and hard at security. If you are going in a soft top truck, well I doubt you will get very far. $125,000 soft top trucks are an easy target for thieves.

Remember it is about the journey.

Here's the prototypical Icon FJ43. Looks like you'd need doors with windows for security, a top over the driver's compartment, and a box for the pickup bed. I think Icon would be the best choice for the fabrication.

LOL! At least the Judge didn't reply with, "Well, the world needs ditch diggers, too," Sempertoy;)

Some of us tend to believe he originates from the bling thread rather than a real traveller :26_16_2:

If money was not object I can think of a lot more comfy ways to travel the world !

I got my off road driver training during the cold war- so I might be confused !

Wow, tough crowd. I thought the boys at the BS were harsh. While I feel many of your responses are dubious, at best, some have offered up good, if not gritty and eye-opening advice. I thank you for that.
