Should be a few good options out there for you. Sit on a few and see what you think. Sounds like you want to do similar rides as me.

Figured it would also be fun to take along a telescopic fishing rod and pitstop and try out some tucked away fishing holes.

I'm jealous of those pics too! Those were from a couple public land use zones about 4 hours south of me near the Rockies.
Saw them on another forum I'm on.
I will look into it some more. Had I bought one earlier this year I'm sure I would have been just fine with it. I understand the KLR650s role as a starter bike that everyone seems to buy because of the price then realizes the short comings after a year or so.

Yeah surf poles and even heavy one piece pier fishing poles are a bit unwieldy. Even in a 5.5 foot truck bed my surf rods stick out when angled as best as I can. Then again I saw guys in smaller cars with poles sticking out the window and the moon roof. I know a lot of fly fishing rods are collapsible and I've seen a few smaller bluegill/bass rods that are the same. Throw some 10 or 12 pound test line and buy worms before you go to your spot and you'd be golden.

I thought those might be from a previous adventure.

I run my salt water poles from the bed into the cab through the back window. Does your back window open? I also use a piece of pipe insulation wrapped around the window opening to protect my poles. Even my 9'6" casting rod fits just fine.

Are your rods not 2 /3 piece rods? I usually take down my rods to travel with them cause like you, they'd stick out the back of the box. Figured a telescopic rod would fit in a saddle bag.

Wait, this is Expedition Portal. How come you don't have some $2,000 custom Rod Holder that attaches to your bed rack?

I wouldn't be fly fishing.... although that is something I want to try out one of these days.

Yeah... no. I wish. I'm on a VStrom forum. I just pulled those pics from a thread about riding your Strom off road.

Yeah the back window opens but unless I set it where the poles sit on the center console it will hit the rack and the tent. It's not the end of the world. I'm thinking of ways to have a more solid mount. I may just mount pvc pipe to the rack and use some elastic to keep it tight.

My 8 footer is single piece. Which is funny because my lake rods are all 2 piece rods and they're 7'6" and shorter. My 10 Footer is a 2 piece, but for a short ride I didn't mind just leaving it be.

Maybe you just found a niche for us to exploit. Just take a normal truck mount for rods and slap the overland name to it.

That's a lot more heavy duty looking than I want or need.

Maybe some of their clamp style.

Reelly want one of those Yakima rod boxes, could use the clamp style but the style could work. Mostly want something for trips to the beach or camping trips that start on the highway and end at a nice lake. Guess I should get a roof rack on my truck/cap before making that investment though...

Wait until @Todd n Natalie and I release our OVERLAND FISHING ROD STORAGE BOX and then you can make that investment.

But seriously, no need for a roof rack or a bed rack solely for the rods, like @YetiX said you can just angle them out the back window.

I'm gonna go to Home Depot or something and pick up some PVC and order some mounts for the rack and see if I can jig something up.

For sure. Lots of people use PVC.

Maybe mount it under the rack? Might help keep it away from prying eyes and the elements?
