Base Camp

Jeeps lookin good. Hows it handle with the extra inch of lift, do you notice it? Can't wait till we can go jeepin this spring and maybe summer.

The jeep seems to ride better actually when hitting bumps and what not. A little more body roll but that is to be expected when lifting anything. My rear driveshaft came in today and the right shock mounts for the 8.8 install. I will be welding the tubes to the housing tomorrow morning and then I can finally start adding thing to the rear end in preparation for the swap. Hope you will be ready for the Spring Fling next month bro and the camping trips this summer. Your really need to get into the north maine woods.

Yeah I'm working on it. I got some good people down here willing to help me so It will be ready and then some hopefully. We need to schedule some camping trips I can't wait. Just pick some times and will do it up! I need at least a two week notice if not better to get time off. Other wise I'm good. Good to know your jeep is better on the ride.

well finally got into the shop yesterday and welded the tubes on the 8.8 (pics to follow tomorrow) and grabbed all of the brakes and hardware I need. Hope to have it swapped in this month

Thanks btw Stump

Do you think the 8.8 is going to be stronger and cheaper then just getting cromolly shafts for the 8.25 and doing the zj disc swap onto it? but I guess you would need to add another what 400 for the gears...
I just always see people doing the 8.8 swap and I have never ever had a problem with my cryco 8.25.. and wonder why... disc breaks sure. but the zj swap is soooo easy and cheap. I just don't get it. please let me know what made you go that route. I love the build man.. nice xj..

Agreed an 8.25 would have been easier in the long run, however I have a dana 35 and the 8.8 I aquired was only $100 and had 3.73's and a posi. The 8.8 is alot stronger than the 35 and still stronger than the 8.25. I found an 8.25 at one point, but it was $400 and that was the cheapest ones around besides a road trip to get another.

OHHHH,,,, I didn't think they ever came with 35s in that year.. **** yea, I'd of replaced it too... esp, with the better ratio already in there... and posi, that's a real decent upgrade.

Are you going to shave it?

yes sadly the last couple years of the XJ, I feel like they just "threw" them together with parts lying around. Mine was stuck with a LP dana 30 front and a dana 35 rear, as well as the no so great cylinder head. Not that I have had any problems with my Jeep, but there is no problem with a little upgrading.

thanks HARDTRAILZ, its getting there

alright lets update this thing. 8.8 spring perches and shock mounts tacked on, center back in as well as axles and diff cover on. soon to have brakes back together and hopefully rearend in next weekend. also pics with the new gopro going to camp for something to do. don't have my lcd screen yet so couldn't tell quite what I was taking pics of, but as LEAST 3 ft of snow going down. only had to winch once on soft stuff near stream.

Wish I was rockin' tires and chains like this skidder

Thats 8.8 is quite a bit beefier than even the 8.25, the whole thing, not just the ring gear size. Housing, tubes etc, and there is a pretty large aftermarket supply for that axle. Hard to go wrong with that swap.

I will likely start building one myself to replace my 8.25. I needed to go up to 4.88's anyway.

Those skidder chains probably weight 400 pounds each!?
