Best 'Aggressive AT' Tires?

Somewhere out in the internet "cloud" is Dakar tyre data from the race. Would be entertaining to read an article on how tires are actually chosen by the different teams, (is it all business and relationships or do any guys actually request a certain tire on its merits?), how many of what tires were in the race to begin with, what were the respective attrition rates, how many blowouts, racer reviews, etc.

For example, many articles include a sentence about the 2014 Minis with tire puncture problems slowing down the leaders, but none say wether they were the Michelins or the BFGs. Not that it would necessasarily be indicative in itself of a lame brand or model, but interesting to read (and read between the lines), anyway.

But a 10 yr history of data could be quite telling.

It's the internet, the info is out there somewhere...

I have a set of e rated dura tracs on my E350 and had a set on my suzuki samurai. I never noticed on suzuki but when i put them on my van I lost about 2 miles per gallon from my previous tires.
I cut a side wall pretty deep on the rubicon trail but it never went flat. FYI I have punctured a few different brands of tires on that trail. If you are not running swampers there is always a possibility of sidewall punctures.

Im leaning towards the Cooper ST maxx in the 255/85r16 size.....

I like the size, just wish it was more common.

I ran BFG ATs before the Duratracs, I go places in two wheel drive that took 4 wheel drive with the BFGs . Used to love the BFGs and sold a lot of them back when I was managing tire shops, anymore IMO there are much better tires available.
I installed a set of 265-75-16 Duratracs at 129,000 miles, now at 202,000 going to have to start looking for replacements by fall. Longest I have ever had a set of tires on any vehicle in the last 44 years of driving

Cooper S/T Maxx are the best all-around tire I've ran to date.

So far I've tried -

BFG A/T
BFG M/T
BFG KM2
Bridgestone Revo
Goodyear MTR
Goodyear MTR w/ Kevlar
Goodyear Duratrac
Micheline LTX A/T
Toyo Open Country M/T

As I said many times, I loved the ST MAXX too, but two things stopped me from buying again, that's weight and stiff sidewalls. I really noticed the difference in the BFG and Coopers in these two very important aspects.

The "best" being entirely subjective and dependent on the particular vehicle, terrain and driving style, my current vote for an aggressive all terrain tire is for the Cooper Discoverer ST/Maxx.

I have run BFG, Bridgestone, Cepek, Dunlop, Goodyear, and Super Swamper tires on various rigs in the past. (Also some entirely forgettable brands.) The only tires I particularly disliked were the Bridgestones and the Swampers. I thought the Goodyears were good, but overpriced.

That's an impressive list of tires! What do you like so much about the Coopers?

Durability/side wall construction, how well they have worked in muddy conditions, how quiet they are on the road, little weight required to balance, perform good in the rain and on the asphalt in general.

I'll probably find something I don't like about them sooner or later, but haven't yet.

I do wish they would offer a load range D since E is really overkill for my truck.

I will be in the market for new Allterrain tires and I am looking for:

30k miles
quiet tire on pavement
good offroad attitude
good tough sidewalls
good in wet roads and snow

I presently have Hankook MT which have been all of the above, but need a more quiet tire and a little better in wet roads!

keeping and eye on the Hankook ATM on a LT285-75-16"

Any chance your recollection of the Goodyear Duratrac's performance can be directly compared with your experience with the Cooper S/T Maxx? I'd love to hear your opinions on the pros & cons of both as they directly relate to each other.

Overland Journal's current issue has a fantastic review of many popular A/T tires, but for the life of me I can't figure out why they didn't include the S/T Maxx and Duratrac! The more street-oriented Cooper AT3 was the overall winner of the comparison test, but it uses a lighter-duty casing than the S/T Maxx and who knows what differences there might be in the tread compound, or how the two Coopers vary in performance on- and off-road due to the different tread patterns?

Dang it. I better go check my mail!! I'll be curious to see how the Cepek's that I bought from them did! (And why one tire is pretty well rounded off on the outside edge! :Wow1:)

I can say that that AT3's we put on the Fiancee's KJ over the winter have been stellar performers to date!! Great snow/ice/rain traction, and wearing well too! (And she curbs the thing constantly, so we're always running a sort of sidewall durability test...)
