Looking at the details of the roof top tent that's in the family room, I think I may mount it like this. This way, the camper would be self-contained, no need to have extra legs going to the ground to support a tent that opens up to the side or back. The support for the open front half would be to the tongue of the trailer, and that support would double as a ladder. I've also shown the rear stabilizer jacks, that will mount in the short receivers I bolted to the corners of the frame.
I'm also thinking I should replace the wheel on the front jack with a solid foot for more stability - anyone have experience with that or will a wheel be fine?
The only drawback to this method of mounting is that the front ladder on the tongue will get in the way of the tailgate opening all the way, so when the tent is open, it will be most convenient to have the trailer unhitched. If people think that's too inconvenient, the options are to open the trailer out the back, which limits access through the tailgate a bit, or off the side, which means the ladder will serve as a leg to the ground.
Thoughts?
PS: It isn't obvious from my quickly hacked together tent drawing, but access to the inside of this tent is through the ends, the sides are just fixed screens.
