While your exhaust and intake manifolds are out why not pull the freeze out plugs and the 2 drain plugs

You would then really be able to clean out the water jacket around the cylinders — most likely the freeze out plugs could use a replacing anyway — use good brass plugs instead of steel

I would bet that there’s a ton of crap in there especially if you used some sort of stop leak

I like what you're doing. I have an 01 XJ that I'm currently building. Just keep in mind that if your current gears are anything less than 3.73, you'll need a new D30 carrier (that's sized correctly) if you're planning in running 4.10s.
