Well, where I'm from, they send in heavy earth moving equipment first, to build a roadbed. Then the workers in the full size trucks can get in. When they're done logging, they leave. Full size trucks can still use the road for about 5 years. After that, only medium size truck will fit due to forest encroachment. 5 years after that, only ATV's will fit.

X2, around here. Full size rigs loose mirrors and get heavy dents and scratches down the sides from the trees on abandoned (not closed) roads. I always get my mirrors folded back on my narrow Land Cruiser too. Then there's the water barring and washouts. If you just want to travel the maintained roads, the full sizes are just fine.

Not to criticize but.... I'm continually amazed at people (usually from the southwest) who don't seem to have any idea what it's like in the rest of the world.

Add erosion, sluffing and rock-falls and there are dozens of trails here in Utah that a full width vehicle just can't pass.

I did not mean to lead the discussion away from your trailer build! I'm sorry it seams that the full size discussion has taken over. The main reason for my post was 2 fold. 1st to say i also have 4 children 2 older boys and a set of boy/girl twins. 2nd i did not know American land cruisers could seat 7 people. Again I'm sorry for the distraction from your wonderful trailer. Please give us somemore updates!

What a laugh. You go in some of the toughest high altitude areas of Wyoming and all you see are hunters with full size pickups from which the same base as suburbans and excursions. Oh, there is the occasional stuck little Japanese pickup with some confused guy from the suburbs.
What do you think the guys who constructed the infrastructure of mountainous areas drove/drive to work?

if you have an excursion or a suburban, i'd like to see you tackle the rubicon. actually, i would pay money to see it...i could use a good laugh.

Box Rocket, great pictures, I have followed your build from the beginning. And as far as your fabricating skills... well I think it’s safe to say that you new enough to build one great looking trailer.

What do you have in mind for a lid? I'm thinking that when I finally get around to building my trailer, I want the lid to be at least 6 to 8 inches deep, that way, I can stow a table or two, and perhaps the chairs. But alas, I haven't got there yet.

As to the comments about a fullsize-rig or suburban, High altitude desert stuff like you mention all over Wyoming is probably just fine for one of those. But the places I typically like to go just are not well suited for a fullsize. Not to mention the maneaverability of a smaller rig. 80's are not what I'd call small, but they are as big as I would ever go for a wheeling rig.

All I meant to say about that was that it works well for me. Small enough to get me into most of the trails I want to get to, can still fit my family and I love the peace of mind I feel in a Toyota with its reliability. I've just had good luck that way with my Toyotas.



Back to the trailer....... I still need to pick up a tongue jack. And of course build the lid. My plan for the lid had been to just build a simple flat lid, but seeing how much stuff I had in the trailer for our shakedown run, I can fill up that space quickly. So, now I'm thinking I'll make the lid ~6" tall or something in that neighborhood just to give a little wiggle room for gear inside. Probably similar in shape to an Adventure trailer lid. Still not sure when I'll get to it. Hopefully soon though.

XJbanker, I'm not going to make it to the WC run this weekend. I've wanted to badly but I'll be in Idaho for a photoshoot, leaving this afternoon.

That came out really great Adam.

One suggestion, get a bolt on drop down leg for the front, I have a weld on and there is so much play in the joint that it makes the overall package a little unstable.

Just a thought. The one AT uses is top notch.

Pics of your setups? Mine is nice and tight? In face almost too tight as the pin is somewhat hard to remove. If its a matter of too small diameter of pin in the aligned holes, why not drill them out to a consistent size and source a larger pin?

This is a good suggestion. I went to pick one up from Henderson on Friday before leaving on a trip to Idaho for the weekend. They didn't have the right weld on peice and didn't have the right leg either.

Gonna try to find another one today, maybe out at State Trailer Supply. Good to hear that people are having issues and that there a possible solutions. Not that I am glad you guys are having issues with them. The thing I like about the weld on one is that I can pull the pin and remove the leg for travel and have less risk of damage, and just have it on when the trailer isn't hooked to the truck.
