You can often rent them at ski areas. We just rented some for the family at Brianhead, I think they were $13/ day with tax.

If you have time, you could do a class on building your own before heading out, then use them on the trip. I dont know how old your scouts are, and that would make all the difference. making snowshoes for a 60ibs kid is easier than a 160ibs kid.

Where would you rent them at?

We have BYU and UVU here....both colleges have sport shops that rent out gear like bikes, snow shoes and etc..

Try your local college scene.

Wish you guys good luck....I'm sure members here have some old gear kicking around.

Last year our scouts built their own shoes out of EMT pipe and webed them with rope. They used nylon web with quick release for attaching them to their feet. They were fairly easy to build, just need someone who can weld galvanized material without killing themselves.

If interested I could get a pic to post up.

Thanks all, those are very good options. I will consult the scout master I am the quarter master on the commitee. Thanks again.

Given all the (in my view) questionable groups REI supports, it seems like should support the BSA with free/ low cost rentals. Might be worth a shot. They can't say no to God, mom, apple pie and the scouts, right?

Our troop made 30 pair out of EMT pipe and some heavy roofing material. The difficult part is connecting them to your feet. I still need to come up with a better solution for that than what we did.
