building the Bullet XV

Looks great! Did they airbrush the grass? Will they spray a clear coat? It's amazing how long one of these projects takes. Sometimes it feels like I'm years from completion.

Well.. .. yes & no, yes the grass is airbrushed on, but the painter made multiple hand held templates of several strands, then held it in front, spray, move, flip over, spray etc.
This got just the right amount of sharpness, not to sharp & exact,as it wasn't touching the truck during spraying, & not too soft & '70s pot-smoking airbrushy, (I was a little concerned about that!)
& yes, there will, of course, be 3 coats of clearcoat over the top of all the paint & accent. Right now, I kind of like the matte carbon fiber look, but I know the clearcoat will just pop the metalic charcoal accent & make it look more 3 dimensional.
I also like the way the charcoal color makes the bolts & rivets pop.

sarconcepts; What a Craftsman you are. I can't believe the camper started out as a U-Haul. JUST FANTASTIC & the paint scheme is Perfect. If you ever make it towards Idaho stop by McCall & drop in the NAPA Auot Parts Store and say Hi. I'm there Wednesday thru Sunday.

I think I need a bigger truck!
VERY impressed... one of the nicest yacht builds I have seen. Sorry I mean Expedition/Camper/Travel vehicles I have seen.

:)

Keep up the posts and the blog, love to read about builds like this!

Here's one custom builder that can do an amazing job with the interior. Just bring wheelbarrows of cash . . .

As many know, CMI did my Sprinter's interior and it is very nice; CMI will pretty much do what you want to the level you want it done.

One thing worth mentioning, though, is that while CMI builds often run into some money, it's more from the time spent producing the special product clients than the rate per hour, which is not different than most groups doing the same sort of work.

And now, back to the Bullet . . .

just kidding..
well, partly.
Bethany & I did pick it up wednesday, & got it fully loaded & were off thursday night. Picking Bethany up right from work, we headed about 6 hours east of here to the highlands of oregon. Now, I don't know if you're all familiar with that part of oregon, but I've been going there this weekend for about 10 years, as a start to the camping season, because the weather warms & hiking & fishing are great, two years ago, we went swimming in the lake.. ..
not this year!

28 to 34 degrees Fahrenheit the whole weekend. Wet snow as we arrived, but that quickly got better & changed to freezing rain, lightning, sleet, then more snow.
Oddly the inside of the bullet, softwalls & all, stayed really warm & comfortable, the heater worked great, the water heater was amazing, all systems worked perfectly in these temperatures, everything stayed warm & dry. Way better than I expected, as I really didn't design for these temperatures.
Of course, with these conditions, not only did we break in the appliances, but we also tested the entry mat, getting it good & dirty.finished 010.jpgthe IPE just wiped down & cleaned up perfectly.
Not two days after getting it back from the painters, after 500 highway miles plus 22 miles of gravel roads, I can officially say we've got the first scratches! funny, this is the first new vehicle I've ever owned, & it didn't bother me at all, this is what it was made for.

I also got some glamor shots once we got back & all gussied up

Really though, this thread will be ending soon, as I'm not one to talk about the mundanities of my recreational life, these threads are about the design & execution of our vehicles, input, advise, etc. & I really appreciate all the input over the last 2 1/2 years, not only for the technical advise, but sometimes just knowing other people are doing similar things gives us confidence to keep pushing the boundary.
I'm sure Bethany & I will run into many of you over the years.. ..& miles.

fully loaded weight - 14,450 lbs
fuel mileage - 14.4 mpg (just for comparison, the toyota gets about 16 mpg with the camper on, & weighs like 5,400 lbs fully loaded)

Was a seriously lame Memorial Day weekend in the Northwest, wasn't it?

Been a seriously lame spring in the Northwest, hasn't it? :(

Oh, well; the rig looks real nice, and I'm glad to hear that it's up to late May's hostile weather.
