For those of us who camp in the sticks and can not have a ground fire, what type of item do you use for your camp fire to keep it off the ground?

fire pit

we went with the Volcano Stove

http://www.volcanogrills.com/news-and-events/volcano-collapsible/volcano-collapsible.html

looked at Snow peak - limited and had to fold up

pit 2 go - big, heavy, great for a big fire, but not for us

Volcano stove
comes in own storage bag
has grill and griddle
one hand pick up, legs pop out and it is set up

fuel:
charcol works, but we only did this a couple of times
we use "grocery store" bundles

a full stick of wood sticks out, and has to burn down to cook over

however, i cut the stick in half with a take down saw
3 pieces of 1/2 stick make a nice fire, cookable with grill
and conserves wood

Snow Peak fireplace Enough room to boil water, cook soup or chili and roast sausages or do Brazilian BBQ. The heat is great. One bag of briquettes per day is plenty and easy to carry.

We use the Camco Little Red Campfire, Its a propane unit and it works great!

We still have a wood burning campfire once in a while, for the most part we use the Little Red campfire unit.
When its raining, we are under our rainfly with cup of hot coffee and warm fire (No Smoke & No Hauling Wood).

just fyi. I tried a ground campfire with my notebook grill and the fire got so hot that it started warping the metal. :(

Not sure if I did something wrong, and it still works fine as a BBQ, but not sure I'd use it again for an open fire.

Just fyi. (BTW, this was the one from sears. not sure if there are different models/brands, etc)

Another big fan of the Pit-2-Go.

It's has more functionality that the old washing machine tub idea (because it's also a charcoal grill), but folds flat for easy transport & storage.

Great dual purpose charcoal grill/firepit.

The camp fire in a can is a nice unit and works fine, but is a bit spendy.
We go to the ocean and use a wash tub.
For times when wood and BBQ fires are band from fire restrictions, I use a propane fire pit I made from a plow disk.

Video of propane fire pit.

Side note: some rocks pop when heated but the lava rock has been fine.

The wash tub has a plow disk on the bottom too, just hard to see as its cover with sand.
Side note: When I make build another wash tub fire pit I will make the pipe holding the tub up a lot shorter. Hardly any heat goes down and the lower it is the farther you can be back from it and feel the heat.

Washer tub is an amazing heat source - just look at how far back everyone is standing from it- and it was pretty cold!
