Ok so the time has come for me to get a camper for my 07 taco for my next trip. Money is kind of tight and am trying to make it go as far as possible. I have been going back and forth between a fiberglass shell, aluminum shell, or a softtop (most likely bestop). I will be using this for me and my dog to sleep in during trips to the backcountry and will occasionaly be sleeping in town while trying to get somewere. I also use my truck to haul things on occasion and would like to be able to remove the top fairly easily (under and hour with 2 or 3 guys). I was wondering if I could get some input from you guys on this.
I love the look, security, and possible roof top storage of fiberglass but am concerned about the extra weight and loss of mileage (every $ counts on my trips). My truck is a 2.7l with 265/75s and I can use all the oomph I can get.
The softoper is nice because its light and can easily be moved out of the way when I need to haul things. I also like the openness of them with sides rolled up. I dont like how I can't add a roof rack, but I honestly don't know if I will ever need it. I'm also concerned about the heat of the black fabric in the summer and the lack of insulation in the winter.
While I haven't found an aluminum shell for the 05+ platform I feel fairly certain I can make one from a ranger or s-10 work and they pop up on CL all the time for around $100. I feel like it is a good comprimise between weight and security.
The bestop is at the top of the budget and the less I spend on this the more I have for other necessities and traveling. I've got a chance to buy a Leer 100XQ with windoors, front slider, and thule rack for a great deal ($250) and feel like its almost too good of a deal to pass up. I just want to make sure I'm going to be happy with it.
Any opinions? My whole goal for this is to keep things simple and not have to set up a tent all the time.
