About the only thing that freaks me out here are mountain lions.

True but, again, mountain lion attacks against adult humans are pretty rare. Yes, there was that jogger in CA but that's the exception that proves the rule - how many have there been since then? Mountain lions are mainly a threat to pets and children.

Rare indeed. There was a kid taken near Ft Collins about 10 years ago. That was my thinking anyway, it's not so much wildlife that worries me here, but ya never can know for sure I guess.

The chance that a bear will wander into an occupied camp while people are up and moving around (which is when the gun is in the truck) are so small as to be negligible. In fact, I've never - ever - heard of it happening.

I've been camped at Yosemite and had a bear all but come into our campsite in the late afternoon. In this instance I think it was somewhat accidental - the bear was obviously mostly interested in how he could get out of the situation. But, I could see where the wrong reaction from the humans present could have led to a confrontation.

I've also have had this happen when I was a kid at scout camp in upstate NY. In that situation the scouts were in the middle of preparing dinner, and after they all scattered the bear did rummage through the food. He did this a couple times over the course of a few days, and was eventually shot one night just feet from my tent. In this case the rangers believed this was a rogue bear who had somehow lost it's natural fear of being around humans.

So, black bears at least will wander into an oocupied campsite.

Also, I remember growing up in Orange County and the local papers had the story of a Mountain Biker that was PULLED of his bike and down a hill where the Mountain lion started to feast. Someone with the biker tried to scare the lion off and discovered that there was another person that had already been killed by the Mountain Lion. Yikes, what a site. I feel so safe at Mountain Bike speeds, but I guess not.

Back to Carry Guns.

Mercedesrover,
Nice. I was looking at in in 9mm as well. I wanted something smaller and lighter to carry when riding my dirt bike in the WAY back and just an all around small carry gun. I hate having a full size hand gun to find a place for etc.
Any jamming issues etc?

Agree that mountain lion attacks against adult humans are rare. I think the other thing about mountain lion attacks is in most cases the first realization you will have is when the lion is on your back. Seems like readily accessible pepper spray or a knife may be a better line of defense than a handgun.

Late to the party here...... When in the AZ backcountry alone, I carry either my SW 357 or a custom built 1911 .45. I prefer the .45 since I shoot it frequently and am very comfortable with it. With all the custom work I had done on it, it's very accurate. I even use it when hunting Javelina.

I also feel the .45 has a little more knock down power over the .357. When carrying for defense, I have it loaded with 230 grain Hydroshock ammo that is quite effective.

My lady on the outher had has held every gun in the area and still cant find one that fits her hand well.

she may be stuck with the 308 on the table.

We recently went through this exercise with my wife, who also has small hands. If you can find one in your area you may want to have her try one of the Kahr pistols - they are available in 9mm, .40 and .45, and are generally well regarded. I'd probably lean towards the 9mm in a gun this small. We didn't end up buying one of these, but they did fit my wife's hands well.

She also found that the S&W M&P series pistols fit her hand reasonably well, so that's another alternative you might consider. They come with interchangeable grips, so be sure to try this with the small grip installed.

It's been pretty good so far. I'm getting tired of waiting for my holster...I want to start carrying this thing!

I just got a Glock 20 10 mm I got it second hand from my best frind and exp buddie. He just upgraded to a 10mm kimber. when he handed it over it was like i was taking his first car.

This is my woods running weapon of choice. The power of a .41 Mag with plenty of rounds on tap. Try Double-Tap for ammo.

Had the same problem with my wife. Small hands.

The Kahr brand is a great gun. But my wife didn't like the feel. She ended up discovering the Sig P239 in 9mm. LOVES it. Honestly, I love it too.

But then I love all my Sigs, like the 226 twins, 228, 220, etc. :punk03:

Put your hands around a P6 (255) if you get a chance. They're only a single stack but fit small hands very well and conceal better than the 226. Might be perfect for your wife and cheap enough that you don't have to worry too much about banging it up. The piles of them that came into the country over the past year are drying up a bit but good deals can still be found. Times were a new un-fired one could be had for $300. Dealers are getting $350+ for a used one these days. Still a bargain for a German made Sig if you ask me. I bought two.

My 4'11" wife has very small hands and she likes the Glock 26. I can't hold it without having two fingers hanging in space (without magazine extension) but it fits her perfectly.

When Stephanie and I travel alone in the US, I carry an HK USP .45.

When I travel in a group, or by myself, I do not carry anything.
