Cheap Fridge <$400 shipped

I took my Edgestar 43 on its first real camping trip over the long weekend and gave it and my truck's battery a real workout. After blowing up my rear axle, I had to leave the truck parked at camp all weekend while I rode around with my buddies. The cooler stayed powered, locked up in my truck with all doors and windows closed, which of course brought the truck's interior temp way up. Two and a half days later, the broken truck fired right up as I loaded it up onto the trailer. It was sure nice to be able to enjoy 35 degree refreshments all weekend! And after years of dealing with power-hungry Peltier-chip coolers, I am convinced that these freezer/fridges are absolutely money well spent!

I'm hoping I was being a bit too paranoid on the fridge. I've been running it in the garage with about two gallons of liquid in it. This morning was the first time I noticed the compressor actually stop. It was running on AC power and the current draw went from about .7 amps to less than .1 amps. I checked it several times after that and the compressor was frequently stopped. So I'm hoping it was just working to cool the food I had put in the fridge (although most of it came out of the home fridge). I also noticed a pretty dramatic voltage drop while the battery is under the load of the compressor (from 12.28 to 12.02). So I suppose my 11.8 volt readings was under the load of the compressor.

Right now I have it running on 12V power hooked up to an extra battery I have (Group 27). I'll see how long it runs before I see a serious voltage drop. I also brought home my fluke and will log the power consumption over a 8 hour period or so.

Well I guess I should share my experience so far. I was one of the people who bought one of these back when they first got noticed on ExPo. We bought the extended 5 year warranty. For the last two years we had been very happy with it. A number of multiday trips and getting bounced around in the Cherokee. Heck I even got it airborne once by not seeing the whoops in front of me.

The last trip in March this year, everything seemed to be working fine and we headed out. We got out to camp and was setting everything up. I noticed the temp was a little higher than I had it set for. I checked and could not hear the compressor or fan running. Hummm... interesting. I pulled the panel off to check for any loose wires but nothing was found. If I unplugged it from the 12 volt side and plugged it back in, it would kick on for about 5 seconds and then shut off. Tried with the Jeep running to make sure it wasn't a low battery issue (I have a 10 gauge wire from the battery to the plug). Still same thing. Not good. Cut the trip one night short (due to this and issues with our dog). Got home and unloaded the fridge. Plugged it into the AC outlet and the compressor kicks on and works fine. It's been running non stop since March that way (and outside of trips, runs non stop on AC at home).

Since I figured it must be an issue with the 12 volt side, I called in for a warranty repair. Compact Appliance (CA) isn't the servicer for the warranty but a third party company Warrantech (IIRC). Called them and they were to have someone come out. I get a call back and there is no servicer in the San Diego area. They wanted me to bring it to Sacromento which I informed them was an 8-10 one way drive from San Diego. They started to give me the run around.

I contacted CA and told them what was going on. They said they would get things squared away and the owner of the company contacted Warrantech about my claim. After that I got contacted by Warrantech that I would get a new replacement fridge shipped out to me. I contacted CA to let them know this but also to find out about my remainder warranty (3 years) as Warrantech said they fulfilled the claim and no more warranty is implied. CA had no issues with sending me out a new 3 year warranty package to cover the remainder time.

I have to say a very big thanks and great customer service from Compact Appliance. They stepped up to the plate and made sure I was 100% happy. Even got calls and email follow ups.

I got the replacement fridge but sold it to a fellow ExPo member without even opening the box. Even forwarded the new warranty package. Since we changed rigs and a top load was not going to work for us anymore, it made more sense to pass it on to someone who could use it.

Would I buy one again? Well that depends. For the price (and extended warranty) it worked very well and I could never go back to a cooler again. At the same time I need something that is as reliable as possible since most of our camping is very remote, there is no store I can go to, to buy ice/cooler to extend the trip. A fridge failure will typically result in a cancelled trip. With as much time and money a trip consumes, is it worth the few hundred dollars less than a "name brand"? The difference in price is soon forgotten when you cut a trip short because of a failure like this. I think next time I need a top load/portable fridge, it will be one of the name brand versions.

As it is with our new Four Wheel Camper, I replaced the 3-way fridge with a compressor style. I went with a Nova Kool front load and will see how well they work. Time will tell.

Happy camping!

I just saw that Compact Appliance now carries an insulation/transit bag for the 43-quart model.

Does $119 seem a bit expensive? I'm not sure I like the idea of it being black either - a lighter color will reflect more of the sun's rays rather than absorbing them.

Further testing

Well, I'm starting to have more confidence in my fridge . . .

Several pages back, another member tested his fridge set to 36 degrees in a climate controlled 72 degree space. He basically found a peak draw of a bit over 4 amps and a duty cycle of 17%.

I have my fridge set up in my garage (80-82 degrees currently) set to 38 degrees off a Group 27 battery (well used, but fully charged). It's been running for about 4 hours so far and my results are fairly close. The fridge kicks on slightly less often than once per hour for about 15 minutes. A bit more often than the 17% duty cycle reported earlier, but close enough to make me feel more comfortable. I too am seeing a bit over 4 amps from the compressor (about .05 when idle). It actually spikes above 5 amps briefly when the compressor first turns on, but that's to be expected. I won't be able to log the data past tomorrow morning, but will continue to run it off the battery and see how long it will go. Not sure how hot my garage will get, but we will be pushing 100 degrees over the next two days.:Wow1:

Looking at the fit & finish in the other photos they've provided, I'd say that cover is WAY overpriced. With the quality they're showing, that's a $30 cover, tops. :Wow1:

I agree a black cover is probably not a good idea. When I was making reflectix panels for my van I had some left over, so I made a cover that slips over the top of my 43qt Edgestar.

It's always that top that I notice gets really warm in the sun, and adding the reflectix cover has definitely decreased duty cycle when it's in the car or on my patio (use it as a beer fridge during parties).

The only downside is that I can't use it while my daughter is strapped into her carseat. Any sun coming in the windshield (driving mornings/dusk) reflects directly off the fridge into her face!

Put a towel over the insulation.

Thanks for the nice write-up, dude. We're still on the fence about cooler vs. fridge.

I have purchased one of these nearly two years ago now. It is still kicking just like day one. The main purpose for this was to provide a non soggy lunch for my sweep team at the pro rally events here in the north east. It has served us well for the last couple years. It has survived the 60+MPH stage runs, as well as family road trips and running constantly in the garage keeping my motivation chilled.

I would say that it was definitly money well spent. My wife, who was sceptical about this thing in the first place. Is now loving the addition for our 1000+mi road trips.

I should have a writeup soon for the addition of the engle slide lock mount and adaptation to the Edgestar fridge (43qt).

Quit with the simple solutions. Surely there is a highly technical, labor-intensive, engineered solution we can all work through.:ylsmoke:

Ok seriously.... Pepsi just came out my nose while I laughed...********!!!!

How about this, a stainless steel framed table with a plastic top that bolts under the window and fits over the fridge while going down the road, but lifts up to allow access while driving? It can be built with European market hinges and brackets and the top can be from recycled water bottles? In addition it can have a second table top that is hinged to allow it to expand doubling the available surface area....lol.

I had a small issue recently. The compressor kept cutting off right after it cut on which typically = a low battery. My battery tested as good but I put in a Sears DieHard Platinum anyways @ about 80,000 miles. The issues continued and new battery tested good (12.4 v). I ran a dedicated 10 ga wire straight from the batter back to my fridge and now the problem seems like it's fixed!

Just an update. I had email edgestar and told them of my trouble. They called back once and I missed the call. Ive been so busy and distracted i havent called back.

Every day I walk out to the 4runner and the fridge is showing high temps and it not working. I start the truck and a few seconds later I can hear the motor turn on and the fridge cools back to set temps and works for the day. next day same. So it turns off some time in the night i guess. I think ill take the advise and run a 10gauge wire back to the fridge see if it fixes it.

Today when I checked it the yellow low voltage light was on( first time) and the temps were high. I got into the truck and my volt meter was reading 11.7 volts. I started the truck no problem and the fridge kicked on and worked like a charm. Ill run a wire and see how that goes then give edgestar a call and see if they have any advise.

calimobber, sounds like a bad battery. 11.7 is not a good voltage at holding. and with the fridge kicking on at start up, its liking the voltage increase from the alternator. it wont hurt to run the 10 ga wire though.
