Cherokee or Grand?

What are the transmission problem that are common with the 42RE? A quick search recealed some electrical gremlins that are pretty straight forward fixes. Are there any major mechanical or hard part failures with these?

I had the electrical stuff first, which was more of a nuisance than a failure. The truck (which was immaculate and well cared for) left me on the side of the road a couple times. Then the trans went out, not sure if it was an overheating issue or what, but the truck was barely ever offroad. 4 months later more speed sensor issues and electrical crap. It never ended. Had a few friends with ZJs who had to replace transmissions as well. The XJs just seem (to me) to hold up much better. Keep an AW4 cool and it will love you forever.

I wish my tranny would go out so that I have an excuse to make it 4wd. It's got 140k on it slips a bit when its cold. I thought throwing a locker in the rear would be enough but i want 4wd :(

I was originally looking for an XJ but came across a nice 95 ZJ 5.2 for cheap so I sprung for that one. It is high mileage (almost 167k now), but I have been very happy with it. It has never given me any trouble, but I have done quite a bit of preventative maintenance on it.

I have the 46RH transmission (I believe this tranny was even put behind the Cummins 5.9 at some point), which is the strongest ZJ tranny. It's essentially a 727 torqueflite (hydraulic) with an electronic OD unit tacked on the end.

From what I have seen in my research, ZJ's seem to be real hit or miss. Some will go for 300k+, and others will make their owners want to set them on fire. If I were to do it again, an XJ would still be my first choice.

Yeah when you dont have 4x4 you really find out what your made of. I think it also makes you a better driver though. You think about things much more. When your ready to do your conversion go for it. It is not too bad to do. I did a 4x4 conversion on my last XJ and it wasnt too bad. Well, except for putting the AW4 in, that transmission is a bear.

Yeah I think that you are right there. There just isnt a lot of consistency with them. I hate it too because I love the factory coils all the way around. If I could find one that I knew was going to last I would scoop it up.

I was ready to do it a few months ago I had a 5 speed, 231, hpd30 and an 8.8, but things happened and I needed money so I ended up selling everything. That's still the plan I just have other things I need to fix first. I still wheel it as much as I can I have been very surprised with what it can do.

My prediction is that if you drive both you will buy a WJ. I've owned both and feel that the WJ is a better vehicle out of the box. Aftermarket support grows every year, modifying it isn't hard and you can go from mild to advanced with both platforms. Mine is mild, only about 2 1/2" of lift with 31" tires. This pick is during a week long overland trip with me and two of my kids.

heres my opinion on the WJ, its great, although it has its faults. Mine is a stock 2003 stock overland with 100k miles on it. As far as major issues, with it I have had none except for the blend door problem which will plague every WJ eventually. It costs about 200 bucks to fix and can be done by anyone.

The backseat room in my opinion is marginal, but its probably the best of all your options. I have done a 1200mile road trip and spend half of it in the back and I was cramped with another person. We had 4 people in the jeep with ski equipment for 4 and other luggage for 2 weeks, well the entire cargo area was filled top to bottom with stuff on top of the jeep as well. but we managed. the comfort for daily driving these are top notch as far as an off road capable suv.

fuel mileage is better than expected, the overland comes standard with the high output V8. my total combined is usually in the 18-19 range, but depending on terrain and speeds i can reach up to 25 in flat areas doing 55mph. fully loaded doing about 85-90mph we averaged 17.5mpg going from michigan to colorado. normally doing 75mph gets me 21-22mpg as i would drive from ft. campbell to detroit about every other weekend when i was there. the range is good, i can usually get about 370 miles between fillups on trips.

the awd system on it can be great but to clarify what was said, the wj only came with the quadra drive 1 system, the 2 is on late model grand cherokees and is much improved with electronic differentials, but as it is, the quadra drive 1 is amazing... if its working. the system uses viscous coupling limited slip differentials front, rear, and in the transfer case. now, im not sure how the front is biased, but i'm assuming my front is blown out, as im sure all the turning is really hard on the front diff. i was stuck in some snow last month and left the truck in gear and looked out my tires only to find one of the fronts spinning, either than or there wasnt enough speed differential wasnt enough to generate enough heat to lock up the diff. i've also hear of the same problem with the center in some trucks, but mine doesnt have that, at low speeds especially if the transfer case is cold, the rear tires will turn over a few times before it starts locking up the transfer case to send some torque to the front. and the only time i can tell this is when im in deep snow the rear will sink down for a second then all of a sudden massive traction and i drive right out of whatever i was in. in 4LOW though it locks the center diff out completely, and doesnt rely on the viscous coupling. but as this system is, its a MONSTER in the snow and rain tracks perfectly straight even when hydroplaning, or doing 70mph through 8 inches of snow. as far as being weak, i will say its good, the 242hd swap for the transfer case is a good case for even larger tires, the 30 in the front is marginal up to 33s with a soft locker or the quadra drive, and a lot came with d44a which is ok as well. now, for the good stuff, 545rfe is a great transmission, but with all chrysler transmissions it needs to be kept up with fluid changes, it is very strong being found in the 1/2 ram trucks, its a 5spd with a variable lockup torque converter.

off road is good even for being stock, i can manage well on a lot of trails in the turkey bay off road in LBL. the suspension offers good articulation for lots of traction, the biggest down fall is kind of a low ground clearance and have gotten hung up when not carry enough speed.

all in all its comfortable, roomy enough for whoever is sitting in the front, where i feel cramped in xj's, has a great stereo, ice cold air, luxurious enough to take on dates with decent looking wood, and nice leather, capable off road. imo its more less on of the best all round vehicles you could be looking for, i bought my 03 overland with 55k on it in dec '08 for 10.5k so they arent that expensive, im sure if you did you could find a nice one with 100k on it for around 6500 or 7000.

The back seat of an XJ is a TORTURE chamber for any adult...Just something to consider if you carry passengers...

Those WJ's really never fail to suprise me when I see them out...They seem to do VERY well in stock form. They may not be real OVERBUILT like a G or Toyota but they do have alot of off-road gizmo's that make them do very well. plus as stated above they articulate VERY well and keep tires on the ground. All in all I think they're a good Expo platform that will keep you and yours happy for awhile. I'm not so sure on interior space, it seems ALL jeeps are cramped in this dep[artment, as I said my major exp. comes from XJ's but a few Zj's have gone past me in my life and they were just as cramped in back. Plus with the Spare in the rear cargo area (someone should SHOOT the designer who thought this up...) you loose alot of cargo space that way. Just some things to consider.

On the flip side if you're looking for a wagon the 4Runner is a good option, especialy the 3rd Gen 3.4 V6

Cheers

I have a 98 ZJ with 189K trouble free miles. It's a 4.0 auto that replaced a 92 XJ. My ZJ has a BDS 3 inch suspension with 1 inch spacers and 31x10.50-15 Hankook MTs. The Dana 35 rear :)D ) contains a Detroit TrueTrac, which is the greatest thing since short skis. My ZJ has been reliable as sunrise and has done everything I've asked of it and more. Fortunately, I have a CJ-5 for the really stupid stuff .
