classic range rover diesel conversion

TAHOE DIESEL. on my RANGE ROVER i have 2 inch pipe. under my HUMMER H1s I have 3 inch all the way ( i did notice power deferance when i changed to 3 inch ) but the sound is a killer :) makes me wanna put turbo on my rover also

what i noticed is the 6.2 is much quiet motor than 6.5


radiator isue is long fixed :)

i never seen or worked on any other motor that is more simple than 6.2. i just love it.

i dont see any reason that this motor wont last over 400k miles. infact most of the guys on DIESEL PLACE forum have over 280k miles on those motors.

HONESTLY I WOULD LOVE TO POST THE SIZE OF THAT PLATE ON HERE, i dont know how to do that. can someone tell me whats the best way to do it?

I'm no exhaust expert but I think 2" might be too restrictive for the 6.2, unless you went with dual 2". I'd bet you'd see a noticable increase in power and MPG if you swap in a 3" system, especially if you plan to add a turbo later...

I have 231k miles on my 6.5 and it runs STRONG! Very little blow back out of the oil filler cap and none out of the dip stick. I'm hoping to get at least 350k miles out of it. I'll be doing a compression test here soon when I replace the glow plugs, that'll be interesting. When the 6.5 get's tired or has a major failure I'll swap in a mil spec 6.2, and add a turbo.

BTW; you are familiar with the potential to snap a crankshaft on these engines if the harmonic damper is worn out? Very important to routinely check the damper. I don't ever want to roll the dice on that issue so I replaced with a fluidampr. Pricey, but it never wears out and the motor has less vibes now too.

Love Diesel Place, there's a lot of knowledgable guys on that forum.

Yeah, heard about that. Problem is I don't know what I'm looking for. Any chance you have a picture of a f'ed up damper versus a good one?

Also, what're your thoughts on switching from v-belts to serpentine?

And... any experience adding A/C to these? That's my next big project once I get my new radiator + electric fans sorted out.

Just to add: Fluidampr is pricey at $400. A stock replacement HB runs about $70 and should be fine for at least 80k miles, but I'd check it every oil change...I've found that you just can't trust the quality of off-shore aftermarket parts.

Seems like the consensus is that it will out live the motor.

Sounds like $400 well spent to me.

Issue I'm having is that I have no room to mount the compressor + pulley without getting really creative. And I'm not quite that talented, unfortunately.

Eric mentioned something about replacing the vacuum pump with a gear driven unit that relocates it completely and frees up that accessory belt spot..

That, or you could look into replacing your vacuum pump and booster with a GM Hydro-boost. You can find them cheap at the salvage yards. Hydro-boost brakes are superior to Vacuum boost. Might be more of a challenge than you care for, but it's another option (assuming you don't need the vacuum for anything else besides the brake booster?)

yes gear driven vacuum pump is gr8,there is lots of room for ac compressor but donno about the condenser haha but i am sure we can find a place for it
