Cool, yes, please post up your experiences. If it's good for a canook, it's good enough for me. :D I'm assuming you didn't get them siped, right?

So has there been a response back from Cooper regarding the defect in the tire? I am very curious to know. I have known Cooper to be a very good company and takes care of their customers. I personally plan on continuing to use them. This MAXX tire looks amazing, and I cant wait to get a set!!

No official response yet, but the local rep says it appeared to be a road hazard strike that hit on a production seam. If you look at the posted pic you see the vertical split and at its upper apex there is a slight diagonal tear. It is thought that an impact occurred at the diagonal tear causing a split at the manufacturing seam. Still no word from the lab rats as far as if the sidewall was defective or not.

just put a set of these in a 285 flavor on the excursion we just picked up, and went to denver this last week. tires are surprisingly quiet for how aggressive they are. vail pass had white out conditions when we went over in 2wd with no problems whatsoever didn't feel it slip once. so far impressed. hoping the high weight rating of these tires will give us some good mileage out of these before we need to replace them.

Interesting response from a local/online tire supplier. I inquired about the ST Maxx and they apparently don't carry Cooper. This was their response:

"We offer the Mastercraft Courser AXT in your size. The Courser AXT and ST Maxx are exactly the same tire (same tread compound and construction, made in same factory by Cooper) with a slightly different tread pattern, see the url below.

I may actually try these out. They're $50 less per tire.

Um, no. That tire is nothing like the ST, Maxx or standard. More like the Discoverer AT3.

Good news from SEMA!!

I talked to Mike from Cooper at the SEMA show this week. He was able to pull up a spreadsheet with several new sizes of ST Maxx listed!! He said they have been having issues with the factory (sounded like strike or union related) so they haven't done much in the last year, but that's about to change!!

He specifically talked about a 255/80R17 size coming out, and he was aware of the 285/75R17 size that Toyo is now making in their new A/T. It sounds like they are finally going to start phasing out the old ST, and replacing those sizes with the Maxx. I wish I could remember, but I think he was saying that a 255/85R16 may eventually come if there's enough demand for it.

I of course put in my request for a few tall but not wide tires that could give mileage gains over the current trend of wide and tall tires. It seemed like he was listening, and since he was able to verify at least one size that fit that description, I'm hopeful that we'll see a few good tires sizes for our needs come from them within the next year or so!!

I did mention that if they do a 255, it really needs to be comparable to the Toyo, not to the current 255 ST, which has a VERY narrow tread. (By my calc's, the current 255 ST is really more of a 235/110R16.)

Anyway, good things are coming! Stay tuned, and keep asking Cooper directly for tire sizes that you want!!

It's fantastic that you were able to speak with the correct person and get some information. When I stopped by and asked essentially the same questions about 255 S/T MAXX, supposedly the person who could answer my question was not around.

I'd love to see the new S/T MAXX in a 255/85R16, but I find it even more encouraging that they have a 255/80R17 on their list. Whether we like it or not, seventeens are the new sixteens and if they are making the new S/T MAXX in a 255/80R17 I'm overjoyed about the possibilities for a narrower, 255 width tire long into the future.

well I am finally running in snow and ice - they track extremely well, are sure footed and deliver in the snow, pretty decent on ice - although not a dedicated ice snow tire - so over I am really digging this tire I am extremely pleased with them, well done Cooper Tires!

16's are the new fifteens, now its 17's and most new trucks are getting 20's, just keep running up the price of owner ship

hate to see the ST go, had them on my f150 and loved them, but when i lift my wj gonna get some st maxx tires probably in a 265-75-16, unless i can get a deal on 5 ST's that is lol

I emailed Cooper Tire yesterday regarding this topic. The response I got said we should see the S/T Maxx in 255/86 16 in 2014. Until then, the S/T will still be available and will be phased out after the S/T Maxx is introduced in the same size. :)
