Depending on your last tires, yes probably lighter. But I bet the steering feel has much to do with the narrow tread face. BFG KM2s are a very narrow 255/85, just like the Cooper ST/Dean SXT MT.

There aren't an Les Schwabs around here...

And Georgia mud laughs at ATs. Hopefully the BFGs will work; they went on last night.
They're so much lighter than my old tires. It's extremely noticeable; fuel economy started to climb already. Easier to steer. Less bump steer.
But they do look odd on a Jeep.

Just here...
Im going to bring this back as I am looking into a new set soon. I have BFG MTs in 255/85 16 right now and there is maybe a month or three left of wear in them and then its time for some new shoes.

Anyone have any real world experience with the ST's? Im looking to go back to ATs that have an increased wear life on the road, where the MTs fall on their face, and good traction in the rest of the off pavement world, including snow. Anyone?

The STT did not work for us in the fleet. We ran three sets of the 235/85-16. Varying conditions from a heavy service body rig to a empty pick up truck. The tires performed well , but the compound is soft. 20k miles is all I got out of them.
These were not the chip resistant tires, which I am told are softer yet.

That's too bad as I was looking at these recently. Cooper even markets their long-life tread on their website.

Ours is pretty severe duty. The BFG TAKO have been about the highest mileage tires for us, well other than the Toyo M55. They go 40k-50k miles. The Goodyear MTR had better life than the STT, and those are not known to be a higher mileage tire.
The Toyo M55 does last a very long time. The cost does not offset the life in those though. Performance once under half tread leaves you wishing they would wear out sooner.

I'll direct you to the Cooper ST thread , which probably has more real world info on the tire than anywhere else you may find....be patient and read it all. As for real world experience, I'm on my second set (in 255/85), they do as well as a BFG AT on the street, and I like them better everywhere I've been, even on the beach. I got 50,000 miles out of my first set, but I'm only going to get 40,000 out of this set....not the tires fault, I've had some minor issues with some high mileage rubber bushings, bilsteins and a used set on Donahoes that decided to drop their fluid in my driveway. The tires are good, they're tough, long lasting and an excellent tread. If I can find them locally I'll probably get a third set next spring.

I wound up getting KM2s in a 255/85-16 but they didn't work out for me. They're the narrowest of all the tires in this sizes and, frankly, I found their street handling lacking.

I'm now running 285/75-16 Cooper STTs with the new rubber and sidewalls. I'm at 4800 miles on them and they have just a hair over 1/32" wear both front and back.

I like'em. I like'em alot.

Yes, please build the STT in a 255/85/16.

I just had to register on the forum to vote for this tire. I hope that Cooper will seriously consider building a tire in this size. I would be all over this tire. Options are so limited in this size. I considered the Toyo MT but its such a heavy tire and its too expensive. I've also considered the Maxxis bighorn but they cost as much as a BFG KM2 in my area. (Sears has the KM2 for $180) I really like the STT and from what I have heard they are better on road and off road than the ST. My understanding is that even on ice the STT is better. So with the soft sidewalls and poor winter driving characteristics of the ST why would I want the ST in this size? The STT looks to be a much better tire all around. Please Cooper, make it in a 255/85/16. I would also consider buying new rims and getting a 33x10.5R17 if anyone ever made a tire in that size.

So for me, my choices are basically down to the KM2 or the Cooper ST. Since I can get the KM2 for less and the KM2 has 3 ply sidewalls and the ST doesn't seam to offer any better traction on winter roads, the KM2 is currently my top choice in a tire this size. Which is really too bad because I really don't care for BFG.

Does any one know how old the tread design is for the ST? Maybe Cooper will freshen up the design a bit and make it more similar to the FCII or something. That would be a fantastic tire in a 255/85/16 as well. Quick someone call ******** Cepek.

Welcome to the forum.

The winter traction on the ST is fine, certainly as good as a BFG AT, better than if the snow is heavy and wet.

I'm not sure how old the current pattern is, but I read a rumour somewhere that the Discoverer STMaxx is debuting in February. I'm holding out on until then before I get new tires.....

Thanks for the input. I've been glancing through the ST thread here on the forum and its winter traction doesn't sound as bad as I have heard others say it is. Although some of those who said it was bad had fat tires. So that might be part of it too.

I haven't heard anything about a ST Maxx tire. Even an internet search didn't show anything. I wonder what that is. I hope it is something similar to the ST but a with 3plys and a little more aggressive sidewall lugs. Then I would be sold. Now I'm anxious for Feb. Of course if they don't make it in the 255/85/16 its pointless for me at this point. Maybe they will also add an STT in our favorite size at that point. That would still be my tire of choice.

Coopers website news section has what little info there is and there is a poor quality youtube video from SEMA with it pictured.

Actually I guess this post should be on the ST thread.....
