So you're a fabricator by trade? This should be a great build to watch.

I'm curious what specific things caused you to ditch the '85 and seek a newer rig. Would you mind explaining?

The cutting of the fuel tank means youll lose approx 3 gal if i remember correctly. So youll lose at best 60 miles range. At approx 600 mile range to a fuel tank. (non 4x & diesel in my case) it isnt to much fuel loss to worry about.

I to didnt wanna cut the fuel tank. But once i ran the numbers losing 60 miles range isnt bad

Hey Chris.... I hope you dont mind but I will be picking your brain on some things if thats ok with you. I do fabrication out here on the west coast, tube bending welding and so on. I will be making my own front/rear bumpers/roof rack/ light bar/ ladders on both sides. , I will be using your kit to do the 4x4 swap. One thing I dont like in the swap is shortening the fuel tank. I'm going to do everything I can to figure a way to maybe move the tank back or something/anything to not loose any fuel carrying capacity.

No problem, pick away. There aren't too many ways around the fuel tank shortening, unfortunately. If you move the tank back as a whole, there still isn't enough room for the t-case. And, you'll have to remove the forward fuel tank x-member from the frame & move it back too (this is what Quigley did for many years) What transmission is in your van? If it's the E4OD or 4R100, you may be able to shorten the fuel tank less than I do to gain another gallon or two. You have to get the t-case installed & take it from there. Worst case is that you loose 3 gallons with my shortening kit.

92 to current share alot of the same parts. I know 96 and before have a different floor, doghouse, hood, and probably coresupport. But doors all years should be swapable.

Here's a pic during the fender trimming process. Glassworks now makes a van fender that does the same thing with a 3" bulge, pretty sweet setup.

Ok I have an issue with the V10 I will explain everything as detailed as possible and then if there are any V10 gear heads out there let me know what you think before I have to take it in. 2001 Ford E350 Triton V10 with an automatic

driving around town it runs like a champ
I get on the fwy and its a whole different ballgame
on flat ground even throttle pressure it runs perfect
when I come to a grade and give it too much gas it bucks and sputters like a wild horse. If I back off the pedal and just give it a super small amount of pedal it seems to go ok.
If I'm driving downgrade using throttle no sputter.
If on the uphill its starts to sputter and I give it a little harder push you can still feel it but not as much.
SO.... I put a new fuel filter in..... no difference
tried different fuel stations fuel....... no difference
ran through two bottles/tanks with lucas fuel injector cleaner.... no difference
new air filter...... no difference

I talked to the previous owner and low and behold it ran fine for him(but of course it did).... anyway he says he had a compression check done on it when he first bought it and everything was ok then went down and had it smogged and it did pass I saw the cert. (he sold the van because it wasnt working out for his job and decided on a truck) so he didnt have it very long.
I have heard something about the V10 and the plug/threads ? Is it possible that the mechanic who did the compression check screwed something up ? and/or does any one else have any ideas for me to check before I take it in. Other than that I really like the van..... Thanks in advance ...Thomas

There is an issue with the spark plugs on the 5.4 and v10. But someone said after 2000 they fixed the issue on the engines.

Now you didnt state the mileage of the van. They are due for a tune up at 100k miles. So i'd check the spark plugs and the coil on plug boots. The boots are notorious for developing cracks and causing intermitent missfires. Ive even seen water get in the sparkplug holes causing problems.

Could be an air flow issue aswell. Cat starting to plug up and restricting the exhaust flow. Air flow sensor might be dirty. I know the ford mafs dont like k&n filters, so check that.

It would be best to drive it with a scanner to see what its doin. I could help if you out if your willing to drive to culver city.

My gut feeling from what you explained is coil issues a scan should show misfire if that is the case. Good luck and let us know what you find.

Thomas, looking forward to this build dude... however, sorry to hear about the stuttering issues. Wish i could lend some advise with that but our 2004 V10 didn't have that problem. Also it might help if you post the mileage on said vehicle.

214 k on the mileage and the transmission was rebuilt shortly before the previous owner bought it. The van was a company work vehicle and was serviced by a fleet company.

nely I just may take you up on that offer, I may have a few days off next week, I should know by this weekend I will send you a PM as soon as I find out.

on the cat issue now you got me thinking ..... driving around town there would not be as much exhaust pressure as say in going uphill (I'm thinking back to high school days and potatoes in tailpipes) I fab so I could make a quick cat bypass and bolt it in to check that out. The only thing that might rule that out is it did pass smog I dont know if their machines would pick up a bum cat..... and now that I think of it the problem does seem to be slowly getting worse.

also to note ... one time during the bucking bronc ride the "service engine soon" light came but then went off one day later by itself.
just trying to give you all the details as possible.
