Cowl snorkel or actual snorkel??

Not a fan but I've used fording equipment in the Marines. We installed on the rare occasion and didn't run around with it on. I see little useful purpose. It comes down to what you like. If you want something sticking up, go for it.

You probably didn't run around with it because we can't afford for every vehicle to have one! Gotta cross, then swim the parts back so everyone else can follow!!

By cowl norkel, you mean this right?

If I could get some kind of top like that for my XJ that would be awesome, however, I think my only option is a spectre cowl intake that doesn't have a top. What brand is that?

Could I run the spectre cowl intake and then possibly run the AEV pre-filter mounted to the top of it through the cowl like a hummer style filter?

Those cowl snorkels are sweet. I may have gone with that style instead of the standard one if I had been given the option. Pretty darn slick. I am still thinking for the dusty road syndrome the higher scoop snorkels are best.

I've had my Jeep about a year up here in Canada, and a snorkel is right up at the top of my list next to a better skid plate for my trans.

I've done two "Oh ****!!" water crossings with water over my hood (not due to excess speed), and both times I thought I was going to clench my entire seat cushion. I've turned back from numerous crossings since then due to depth.

I was lucky and didn't suck in any water, but it only takes once to destroy your vehicle. I now walk all crossings (live and learn, right?) and know that this is a piece of kit I won't regret, once I pick it up.

Snorkel would be close to dead last on my list of things to do. Skid plates, armor, all services up to date, cooling system hoses (all of them) replaced, etc, before looking at things like snorkels. Maybe you're there already, but if not...

i have been considering the spectre setup also. mainly to free up some engine space. reviews i have read say they are loud, but that wont bother most of us.
just found this interesting pic on google.

but it doesn't solve the space issue

there is another option other than Spectra, i recall liking it better. But the Spectre one is CARB certified for us CA guys.

Im searching for the other brand, i will post up

River Raider sells a kit for $370 :Wow1:

and looks a little silly to route the air back and forth, home building a hybrid would be ideal

That looks nice as well but if I'm going to go with a cowl snorkel set up its because I can remove the factory air box so I can put my 2nd battery in. I might have to fab something up and see what happens, possibly by the Thor setup and fab up an elbow to connect the prefilter from aev on top of it

I think I need a bigger truck!
I run the Spectre Performance cowl snorkel on my XJ for a few reasons. Keeps the dust out of the intake better than the stock location, keeps water out and helps prevent hydro locking if you get in that situation and it allows an XJ to run a second battery under the hood (my main reason for this mod).

Works great, well made, great price and looks well...blingy if you are into that sort of thing? Me, I like that no one knows it is there until I fire up the Jeep. At start-up when cold it is loud, but only until the IAC sorts itself out, then it is ok. At WOT it is loud, but a great throaty intake loud. I like it and am totally used to it now.

Cant beat $149.00 too.

The only filter on the spectre is in the pill shaped area in the middle correct? I think I could find a 90* elbow that I could put in and up through the top of the cowl and place a pre filter on top of that.

I'm liking the look of these cowl snorkels. Especially good for me as our Jeep is our daily drive and my wife does NOT want a snorkel on it.

Are there any drawbacks to using a cowl snorkel?
