Crankcase and gearbox breathers BJ42

Hi guys...

I've got a 3B engine (the 3.4 diesel) and the H41 gearbox fitted into my 1965 uuhmmm.... landr*v*r....

The 3B has got a crankcase breather that just consists of a steel tube coming from the side of the block and points down, it's got a few bends in it.
It doesn't go back to the intake or anything..

Is this a problem for deep water wading? Will it be possible for water to get into the engine through the breather? Do you guys normally do something about this, like fitting a hose on it and raise the end or something? Surely this will result in oil condensing into it and sitting at the bottom possibly blocking the hose??

And how about the gearbox breather? I believe it does have a breather on the (single piece) transfercase, but not one on the gearbox IIRC. Is this ok or should I make something up?

Thanks in advance!!!!

I know nothing specific about your mutt, but I would assume such things are fairly consistent no matter what you have. Unless you are sitting in water, I wouldn't think getting water in your crank case breather would be an issue. Mine is actually factory plumed into the intake manifold. That said, if you did get water in there, it would really suck and I should think it would be a fairly simple thing to run a line into your intake or something similar.

As for the tyranny, I have gotten water in mine in some pretty deep crossings (I now have all the breathers run into one half inch line tied to my snorkel). It only happened once, and I actually only got water in the transfer case, not the tyranny, but if you can get it in one, you can get it in the other.

The only bloke that I know with a 3B is in the bush until Sunday. I'll look at how his is set up. His is in a 70 series LC, so if it is routed to something, we'll know.

Does it look like this?

Thanks for all the replies guys!!! Top!

Yes, the breather indeed looks like that. I've read stories of people plumbing it into the intake manifold but they also reported lots of oil in the intake, something I want to avoid. If plumbing it into the air filter it will get turned into an oilbath filter at some point... not good...

I'm not sure if water would actually get in there, as the entry to the block sits quite high and there's a positive pressure in the crankcase, although mine hardly blows, it's in really good nick..

So if the gearbox vents past the lever there's not much that can be done about that one. If one would make a breather in the topcover, water would still be able to get in past the lever I guess.. I'll have to think this one over.

The T-case sits a bit lower and it allready has a breather on top, it's just waiting to be extended..
One thing to keep in mind offcourse is that I've got that little problem where oil migrates from the T-case to the gearbox. But that's solved the cheap way with the hose between the level plugs :sombrero:

Sacreledge :sombrero: haha. You could look at it from another perspective, I'm trying to teach the old Landy to be as reliable and tough as a Cruiser, and by stuffing the engine and gearbox in I'm giving it an example like how it could and should be :).
It really transformed the old Landy, it's not slow and sluggish any more, it really goes!!

(do I get any points for saying I used to own an HJ60 in Australia, and I LOVED it!!!! I want one again!!!! )

You'll want to pull the transfer case apart and replace the seals. The hose thing is really only a temporary solution in my books as eventually the leak will be such that the level is the same in both tranny and transfer and at that time one will be over full and the other too low.

If a 3B naturally aspirated wakes up a Landy then I KNOW I'll never want a Land Rover!!

Does Lucas, the "Prince of Darkness" still reign over the Landy electrical system?

So far the hose is working quite well, I'll see what happens..

I'm actually looking into the possibility to replace the H41 with an H55F, but I still haven't figured out if the single piece transfercase fits on the H55. Ususally it has the split case Tbox.
I've got the handbrake on the Tbox so I like to keep this one.
So if that's possible I'll have to pull the whole lot apart anyway.

Haha, yep, the 3B makes the Landy fly. A standard 2.25 diesel Landy is a dogslow piece of MMMM. The petrol is just as bad. Land Rover has never made a proper engine, the tdi's are underpowered as well, too much turbolag. They don't DO anything at low revs. The 3B is like a tractor, it pulls from no revs at all.

Hehe, the electrics are all new, and most of it is NipponDenso now ;). All the relais are reliable aftermarket ones, and all the wiring is new.. So no problems there anymore... :)

No, you cannot mount the single peice transfer case to the rear of an H55F. The single peice transfer case uses a 16 spline output while the H55F uses a 19 spline output.

The only thing left for you to do now is transplant your drive train into a 4X4 that REALLY is the "Best 4X4XFar!", a Toyota Land Cruiser.

I've done the fillerplug hose trick on a couple of my cruisers with no long term problems. I have also had my BJ60 past the door handles (with 2" lift springs and 33-9.50s) with no water going in the breather.

Ah, so that won't fit... And yesterday, after some extensive googleing, I found out that the H55F is also physically longer than the H41, so even if the transfer case fitted, the whole lot wouldn't have fitted as it's too long..

Oh well, I'll just stick to swapping the diff ratio then, ditch the 3.54's and go for 4.11's

That way I will even get a working speedometer, assuming BJ4*'s used 4.11 diffs that is..

(what R&P does an '82 HJ60 have with the 4speed)..

Best 4x4xfar, well that's open for debate :sombrero: , I love them both.

I love the simplicity, caracter and looks of the Series IIa (headlamps in grille) and I love the looks, ruggedness and shear reliability of an HJ60 or any old 40series truck. It's just that parts are hard to get over here, not to mention expensive, and they have one BIG problem here, RUST!

So I'll just have to wait and see what happens with the breather, I don't really intend to take it into any really deep water anyway as all my camping stuff is in it, including a fridge, and I would rather want to keep all that from getting wet... Landy's are no LandCruisers when it comes to panelgaps, doorseals, and keeping water out ;)
