...or as Homer Simpson would call it, "Crisi-Tunity." :sombrero:
Although in this case the "danger" was pretty minimal.
We had a forecast of snow yesterday, 3 - 6" in the metro area (which turned out to be wildly pessimistic - it was more like a trace) but I decided to drive the 4runner instead of the DD Mazda.
Good thing. While driving home after shopping at the commissary, a kid in a Jeep Patriot pulled right out in front of me. I slammed on the brakes but it was too late, I hit him broadside right behind the drivers' side front wheel.
Nobody was hurt and my air bag did not deply (maybe because of the low speed or because I hit on the right front of my 4runner and there was no passenger.)
I was able to drive away and the other guy got the ticket. Damage can be seen below:
Bumper is pushed back on the right side, right front fender is buckled just a little bit, and the headlight was popped out of alignment (pushed up by the bumper, I think.) Drives OK and I think my speed was low enough to mean no frame damage.
The plastic under-bumper seems to have taken the brunt of the impact. Didn't even break the turn signal which surprised me!
So that's the "danger", the "opportunity" comes next: I haven't gotten a damage estimate yet but based on what I've seen at body shops, most likely they'll want to replace the front bumper.
So I'm thinking: If I'm replacing the front bumper anyway, why not go with something a bit more beefy?
I Know ARB is the preferred one here but ARB's are hella expensive (something like $800 new) and they seem pretty heavy. I'm thinking maybe something like a tube bumper?
Any thoughts?
What sucks is that two weeks from today I take off for Death Valley, and I don't think I'd be able to have anything fabbed up before then.
I just hope I can get my right front headlight pointed in the right direction and everything lashed down before the trip.
