Custom Outlander Sherpa II RL

I heard back from Robert (Outlander Trailers) about the parking brake system. He says it must be assembled from two sources. The axle with the parking brake option is from Dexter. The cable system is from Madison Power Systems.

Someone asked me about the power system and I thought I'd post that info here in case others were curious.

The 12VDC system can be plugged into any AC outlet through the automatic shore charger. The charger also has a maintenance function so the trailer can be left plugged in during storage to keep the batteries charged (the trailer has dual AGM batteries).

Robert has spent the past day and a half fabricating mounting brackets (solar panel, refrigerator, HVAC unit, generator, area lighting, clearance lighting and LPG cylinder). He also took the trailer on a test drive yesterday and says it pulls great.

Today he picked up plumbing, electrical, and duct fittings and will be working on those systems today and tomorrow. I should have more pictures tomorrow night.

I received another update from Robert (Outlander Trailers) tonight. He's really working his tail off to get the trailer completed as soon as possible. Considering all the options on the trailer (not to mention the size of the beast), it's amazing how fast he's getting things done).

Here's the info...

1) Water System and Generator - The generator is mounted. The water system is complete except for wiring the pump. As you can see, it will have a 12VDC faucet, a gravity outlet, and the fill inlet. Robert will fabricate a cover for the faucet to keep road grime off of it.

2) Air Conditioning / Heating - The HVAC system is mounted and complete.

3) Area Lighting - LED lights mounted on each side of the awning.

4) Fridge and Solar Panel - The fridge is mounted but not wired. The solar array is also mounted (its in the raised position in the photo). The array is also removable for positioning in the sun when the trailer is parked in the shade or facing the wrong direction. I will have between 25 and 50 feet of cord to connect the array to the electrical system.

Major items left to complete:
1) All wiring
2) LPG and fuel can brackets
3) LPG - stove plumbing
4) shelving in fender boxes

The next item in line is the auxilliary electrical system. Robert has the box ready and most components mounted on their panels.

One more pic...

Lookin good. any concern about the fridge out there exposed to the elements and dirt/rocks/mud kicked up by the jeep?

At first thought, yes, but not anymore. Few things...

1. The refrigerator will stay cooler longer where it's at rather than in the black box of the main trailer box.

2. It will be much easier for me to get to rather than having to swing out the spare tire carrier, open up the main storage box, and slide the refrigerator out. I'm living out of the Jeep/trailer for half a year and will be going into the refrigerator quite a bit...ease of access is priority number one.

3. The refrigerator has the cover, which helps out a LOT.

4. All I should have to do is occasionally blow out the compressor area.

I don't foresee me hauling it through big ol' mud holes, so I'm very comfortable with where it's located.

BTW...the height of the roof top tent (in the stored position) is 6 feet 6 inches. :Wow1:

By no means am I questioning the convenience of its current position. For that it makes perfect sense. ALso, this is an outstanding build so don't take my comments too critically. But I'd still be concerned about the kind of pounding that fridge is going to take. Yes the cover will help for sure, but a few hours of being pelted with gravel kicked up from the jeep will make short work of that cover and then start denting your fridge casing. And as for mud, you won't need to go through any puddles at all to be dealing with serious mud. The worst mud I've had to deal with on one of my trucks was after a light sprinkle of rain that wetted the dirt road just enough to make the road surface a bit sticky. Then mud stuck to the tires and got thrown and caked on EVERYTHING!!! I spent $50 at the car wash and still didn't get it all cleaned off. No mud holes involved.
Again, you've got a seriously sweet trailer. I just had some thoughts looking at the latest changes and thought I'd think out loud a little. Good work.

Your points make sense, and I've not taken offense at all. :)

Someone else mentioned to me about installing something to keep rocks that my Jeep kicks up from hitting the trailer. He's an Aussie and says this is a problem where he drives (lots of unpaved roads). I may fabricate a metal shield which will be angled toward the Jeep to keep foreign objects from hitting the refrigerator. This is not a certainty, but something I'm kicking around.

Thanks for your input! :D

Will do. I have a friend of mine who had a HUGE TJ with the same thing on his hood, so it should be easy for me to remember that. :) See you there!

Awesome trailer. Robert is a great guy and an excellent craftsman. I have to concur with the concerns about the refridgerator out there though. This is my trailer after the Trans-Taiga road. There is no paint left on any leading edges. You can see some of the rocks still on there that make the road bed.

400 miles of gravel must be a long trip.

If you run into problem with the Fridge you could probably have an aluminum shroud made for the front of the trailer to cover it.

That's along the lines of my thinking. Some type of metal in front of it should do the trick.

Bears and raccoons too...

Hahaha...it's locked! ;) Would suck for a bear to rip off my refrigerator...if that happens though, it better run quick because I'll be pissed! :D

I spoke with Robert (Outlander Trailers) today. I'll be picking up the trailer on Monday! :wings:

Just received an email from Robert (Outlander Trailers) who is apparently burning the midnight oil. Here is a picture of the electrical system. It's a test fit and will now be disassembled, wired up, and reassembled.
