Daily Driver Dilemma

Ok. I have a dilemma.. I have a 2004 Audi A4 which has been at the stealership once a month every month this year. Well the warranty expired 21 days ago and they told me yesterday it now needs $800 in repairs, mainly the waterpump AND there is an ongoing issue with the airbag sensors they can't seem to fix. However, I also have a '92 FJ80, '84 FJ60 and '74 FJ40. My question is... Can y'all give me some pro's and con's of selling the Audi and using the FJ80 as a daily driver. I owe a little less than book value so I'd probably break even and all of the LC's are paid for. Here are a few I've already come up with.

Here are my pro's:Even though gas is higher, my insurance would go down enough to cover 2 tanks of gas a month. Also I wouldn't have any car payments which would save me another $365 a month. I can do a good bit of the work on it myself or with my dads help. It's got a new paintjob due to being keyed in Nashville so it looks all snazzy.

Now here are the cons with the 80: the A/C needs fixin.. might be a hose might be more. The engine has a nice little tick to it, hopefully only a valve adjustment. Yes gas mileage sucks but like I said the difference in insurance costs will make that up. It has some routine maintenance needs but nothing too big. Yeah, it's the slower 3FE but I drive 10 miles per day round trip and the top speed limit on that drive is 50mph so not a biggie.

I actually put a for sale ad on here a few months ago for the FJ80 but I have to admit I haven't really "tried" to sell it because it really does run well and it is a good car. So help me out. Let me know what you think. Do you think I'm stressing too much over the Audi?? I'm waiting on a call from the service manager to see if they will cover it or not and have made a call to Audi USA (who said in the end its up to the service manager). Do tell!

Sell The A4 and drive the Cruiser...
That's what I'd do. But then again I commute in my 4WD truck and go 4WD'ing in my chores truck and do chores in my commuter, so my choice is easy...

get rid of the Audi for sure. I'm sure you will save loads of money in repairs by selling it months ago ;)

10 miles a day?!? Who cares if the MPG are bad with a trip that short.
Save your money and buy another set of rims/tires for the road.

At my old job it was 50 miles a day with mud tires and a 3" lift. It cost me in gas but saved me in insureance and car payment.

$800 repair will buy 228 gallons of gas, which will get you 2280 miles down the road. 2280 miles/10 miles a day trip = 228 days(45 weeks) of driving. That is almost a whole year of driving.

Sounds like you need to sell the Volkswa... err Audi AND the FJ80, and daily drive the FJ60! You will enjoy that more than anything else! I daily drove my 60 for 3 years without ANY problems... plus it didn't look like a soccer mom "suv"

I've actually considered that. I drove the 60 for 2 years as a daily driver and loved it. I am going to sell the Audi. The more I've thought about it today it just makes sense. Selling the Audi will save me roughly $450 a month. If I apply every penny of that to my debt I could be debt free (except for my house) in less than 9 months...... I still think I'll drive the 80 for now. Occasionally I do have to drive to East TN and South Alabama to visit family so it is a good comfy, albeit slow, roadtrip car. Decision made! :safari-rig:

Sell it.

I am probably one of the most "green" people on this forum, and yet my advice would be to sell the Audi. The cost-to-benefit ratio seems totally in favor of dumping that car. Plus, if you are really concerned about doing something right by gas mileage or environmental concerns buy a cheap eco-friendlier car, ride your bike, or carpool. So many options. The only one that doesn't seem like a good idea is getting rid of any of your cruisers.
