Dan Cook is Fly Fishing the Globe

I searched the ExPo forums and couldn't find an entry about Dan T. Cook and his trip to go "Fly Fishing Around the Globe."

Dan is currently in Chile, after a trip that has taken him from Colorado USA to Australia, New Zealand, across Russia, through Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, then on to Argentina.

Dan's plan is to continue north, visiting countries on the west side of South America, then through Central America and finally north across USA and Canada to the Arctic Ocean this summer.

Dan's trip is sponsored by lots of fishing gear manufacturers, and also by Campa USA. Dan had originally planned to drive a Chevrolet pickup, outfitted like a Trophy Truck. One test trip put an end to that idea. Instead, Dan shipped his Campa USA trailer to Australia, where he purchased a Toyota Land Cruiser 78.

Dan's rig

Here are a couple more photos of Dan's LC 78 and Campa USA rig

Dan built a cage-like shell on the LC78 for security. The cage is covered with a canvas tarp while driving to keep dust out (well, keep dust down).

After 30,000 miles of driving, the rig has worked out well.

I remember reading about this a while ago... The Chevrolet trophy style truck was actually built up right around the corner from where I live at Mt. Logan offroad... I think fly-fishing around the world would be an amazing trip!

Expedition information resource

Hello Expedition Portal Community,

A friend posted a link to this site and I thought I’d stop by to say “hello.” Greetings from Bariloche, Argentina!

As many overland trip planners know, detailed information on extended, international expeditions is sometimes harder to come by than a cold beer on a hot Summer’s day in outer Mongolia. I just wanted to invite anyone who is in need of information to e-mail me if you think that I may be of assistance.

I cannot help with any locations that I HAVE NOT visited. However, I may be of service to anyone who will be going to where I have visited. Please refer to the map on my website for those destinations. I can also offer some suggestions/recommendations on gear and that sort of thing as well.

I'll gladly accept information and advice as well.

Obviously, anyone who is a member of this site is already been bitten by the expedition/adventure bug. Similarly, I can tell you that my trip has been the most incredible, exhilarating and satisfying thing that I have ever done. Of course, I’m not quite done yet.

It has been said hundreds of times and it now firmly “cliché,” but go out and live your travel dream!

Cheers!

Updated location, roads, companship

Greetings All,

¡Hola! from Guayaquil, Ecuador.

Thank you for the support of my adventure. As a couple of people have noticed, it has been a solo journey since my former fiancée lost her marbles and returned to “normal” life in the States back in June. I have found solo travel to be quite exciting and rewarding and now believe that it is really the only way to go. It certainly forces one to get out and interact with new people rather than rely on someone familiar for conversation, entertainment and whatnot.

This should probably be posted on the “Central/South” America forum, but those interested in shipping your vehicle around the Darian Gap, the only option currently is www.csav.com. It is RoRo service that serves both sides. I will be shipping my LC from Manta, Ecuador to Balboa, Panama in mid-March (there are plenty of port options). However, I urge anyone who will need this service to begin looking into it far in advance of your needs. It took 6 weeks of e-mails and constant reminders to achieve an actual (and necessary) reservation. It only visits each port once a month, so it could definitely put a crimp in your schedule if you happen to ¨miss the boat.¨
Also for those planning a South America trip, keep in mind that 2,300 kms of Peru’s 2,400 coastline is desert. Quite interesting for about the first 500 kms.….rather tedious after that. An inland route would be preferable.

I also noticed some postings on the South America forum concerning road conditions. Most roads are in fine shape under normal conditions. Argentina's famed "Ruta 40" is rough as is Chile's famed "Carretera Austral." Don't expect to make good time on these roads, but if you are traveling on them you probably aren't in a rush anyway. (Neither comes anywhere close to the conditions found on the Trans-Siberian "Highway", however.) If my recent experience on the Pan-American is any indication, covering 1,000 kms in a day is pretty exhausting. Hope that helps.

Shoot me an e-mail if you have questions.

Thanks again for tuning in. Best of luck to everyone.

Cheers,

Dan
