IF their story checks out, I'd offer a 1K REFUNDABLE deposit upon receipt of those docs from US Customs. If the docs don't arrive or look shady, I'd pass.

Quite possibly legal. The US Gov't does occasionally import late(r) model Defenders for use, then sells them afterwards. I've seen/heard it done with the military usually.

My question has always been how to get a bank to loan me the money to buy one since I don't have $35k+ lying around that doesn't have a better purpose in life (like a mortgage, etc)?!? Haven't tried, though. Maybe it's something simple in a non-auto loan package?

Ughh... they have been trying to sell this for over a year now. ("buy it now" 129,000) this is the same 110 that had a clutch pedal, and was automatic! This 'customs' story is new however...

The Defender name was not adopted until 1990 as a measure to distinguish the utility Land Rover model from the Discovery and Range Rover. Between 1983 and 1990 the coil-sprung utility Land Rovers were officially known as the Land Rover Ninety or One Ten.

Before 1983 it was the Series 3. No 110's etc until 1983

"The way this vehicle was titled it's listed as TMU and the mileage on the title reads 999,999 however if you look at the photos or come in person you can see the truth. "

Uh huh....

Just because one manages to wash a title and get a title for an illegal vehicle, that doesn't then make it a legal vehicle. There are plenty of ways to license one if you want to roll the dice.

Yep the clutch pedal seems to have fallen off........and the notes about the
engine gearbox change have disappeared too.

The pics are from the same location - is it the same seller though ?

House is for sale too- all toy's must go-..

A couple notes from a Ex Land Rover guy (and Jeep convert :sombrero:) so correct me if I'm wrong:
  • 2002 Had Td5 engines, not TDi 300
  • Neither engine was offered with an automatic transmission
  • Not sure but dashboard appears not to be newer, not a 2002
  • The Land Rover lettering over the hood is 2009 and not age conform; should be a be the Defender name below the hood.
Not sure if legal or not, but sure some things questionable.

My guess would be this is an actual 1979 Land Rover that was rebuilt to 2002 specs. This guy has had auctions before. The last one the buy it now price was $125000, but it was not the pickup version, it had rear doors.

Nice looking rig, and if you were to import a 1979 and rebuild it to 2002 specs, you would have $40K to $50K into it, but the seller should be more forthcoming about the origins.

A Td5 chassis with a 300Tdi engine, running an auto and registered before the first 110 ever existed

To be legal in the UK it would need an SVA ticket, no way is it genuine Land Rover unless it's SA built.

That would have been my guess too but the title reads 2002. Additionally, the specs are not even clean 2002 specs ... Some is never, some older.

I disagree. This is a factory truck, probably came from Keith Gott or L Jackson from a surplus auction or cancelled order from the factory. He says it's a 2002 and legally a 2002 but had to put the 72 date on for the ebay auction? That seems a bit fishy. I doubt ebay cares. If it has papers as a 2002, then it should be fine in any state as long as it can pass emissions.

Most ROW trucks are 300s on TD5 chassis. Not uncommon at all from the factory. Just can't be sold in the EU.

cheers
