The Cummins 4BT is a pretty common swap. Merc diesels have found their way in, as well. Do a Google search, and you'll find a lot of info, I'm sure.

Here's a site I ran across a few years ago. haven't visited it since, and don't know if there is anything useful there, but thought I would leave it to you to find out. :)

A friend of mine put a 4BT in. And then a new trans, transfer case, axles :)

:wings: Lots of torque with a 4BT! I think I'd want at least D44's for axles.

And while the D300 T-case will hold up, the standard SR4, T4 and T5 trannys wouldn't.

The T176 might, and the T18 would for sure. Not sure about the auto's.:coffeedrink:

IIRC, a 4BT is about 300# heavier than a 4.0, and will need an intercooler and more boost to get it up to near the 4.0 HP levels (although torque will be significantly more). Suspension upgrades, as well as drivetrain, are mandatory with a gas -> diesel swap.

And most 4BT swaps that I have read about are only getting 5-7 mpg more than a 4.0, so fuel "savings" is not a justification for the swap.

I'll put in a 4.6 stroker before I jump off the diesel cliff, but that's just me.

Here is a site devoted to 4bt swaps

I've been told that the NV3550 and NV4500 will bolt up, but you need to insure the impute shaft has the right spline count and length. Advanced adapters might help you as they specialize in adapting things and sell both transmissions. Great thing about CJs is the transmission mounts to the skid plate, great for the at home fabricator. If you get the NV3550 (witch people have used with the 4bt before) then get an ultra low gear in your differentials, 5.13, 5.29, or 5.38 with 35" tires and you should never have a problem. Granted that might be so low that it defeats the purpose of the swap, that is fuel economy on the highway...
As for fuel pump and tank converting, I know nothing, I see nothing!

A friend of mine drives a STOCK cj7 with a diesel(2.5 Isuzu).
Sucks,wants to upgrade...
Maybe a 2.8 from a diesel Kj...

A lot of guys take TDIs out of VWs and swap them. For a stock jeep with stock gearing it would make a decent daily driver or highway vehicle, but it might be a bit gutless for offroad.

You can also find a lot over at jeepforum.com. That have a HUGE CJ section over there.

Also, there is a guy here who did the Merc into his CJ-8, sure sounds like a SUPER cool swap!
