...Euro VI standards, that's a different story...

If SCR equipped, (EPA 10 emissions level,) class 6-8 trucks here in the states are any indication, mileage figures would improve. Though DEF consumption rates are 2.5-3.5% per diesel used, it's still a net gain in mpg.

And yet, people argue that diesel isn't worth it.:Wow1:

With trucks there is almost no comparison because the mileage numbers are so different.
With small cars the gassers have been creeping up in their fuel economy #'s so the premium you have to pay for a diesel engine in a car is a tougher decision to make.

Toyota Europe announced the specs for the 2012 4x2 HiLux pickup. The standard engine will be a 2.5L version of the D-4D turbodiesel that produces 250 ft lbs of torque and returns 32mpg on the European combined city-highway driving test.

For comparison, the 2011 VW Amarok 4x4 pickup with 2.0L twin turbo diesel produces about 295 ft lbs of torque and returns 31 mpg in the same combined mileage test. Both VW and Toyota meet Euro V emissions standards without urea injection. Euro VI standards, that's a different story.

For additional comparison, the 2011 Toyota Tacoma V6 4x4 makes 266 ft lbs of torque. EPA combined rating is 15 mpg.

32MPG imperial is 26.6mpg US. not that it isn't impressive, but there is a difference.

The mpg figure that VW Europe reported is in the press release linked to the Autoblog page. The figure is 7.3 l/100 km. By my calculation, that's 32 mpg in USA gallons.

I'd agree with that in the US market. Kills me that you can get a Bluemotion Golf in Eu that gets 62 mpg (US) combined. Not a hybrid, just a modern diesel. Not touching that with gas anytime soon.

you are correct. I didn't see the drop down for the rest of the report the first time.

that is astonishing.

imperial mpg is a British measurment unit not a European measurement unit. I wouldn't assume they are using imperial mpgs in the article but they might be.

please see the post above yours. But I have found that unless listed as lt/100km in Europe it is typically imperial.

But in this case it was lt/100km converted to US MPG.

2012 Mercedes M-Class diesel

Reviews of the 2012 Mercedes ML SUV are appearing on the auto magazine web sites. The 3.0L V6 turbodiesel is upgraded, now producing 455 ft-lbs of torque. Despite the power gain, the EPA city rating for the diesel ML have improved to 20 mpg city, quite good for such a heavy vehicle. Highway rating remains at 25 mpg.

The price of the 2012 diesel engine is only $1500 over the price of the standard gas V6, down $2500 from 2011. Who says diesel engines have to be expensive?

The 2012 ML continues Mercedes' recent policy (since 2006, I believe) of not offering a two speed transfer case in any vehicle for USA except the G Class. The M Class for world distribution has an Off-Road Pro package available that includes a two speed transfer case, raised suspension and locking center and rear differentials.
